San Francisco is known for being one of the most dog-friendly cities in California. There are not too many dog-friendly establishments found in the Lakeshore neighborhood as it is more residential and heavy on the natural park areas.
Mild weather is the norm in the San Francisco area. Lakeshore is right off the coast, however, so fog will often be an issue and has a tendency to stick around for longer into the day. The reduced visibility during the morning hours might make afternoons and early evenings better times to walk with your furry friend.
The residential areas are almost grid-like with a combination of front and rear drives. The San Francisco State University and the Stonestown Galleria are both within the borders of this neighborhood and places you and your pup will find more automotive traffic and sidewalk experiences. Keep your pup on a leash in these areas and be ready to pick up and carry out any messes.
Off the Pacific coast is Lake Merced, a large freshwater lake and the namesake of the 614-acre park that is a popular destination spot. A 4.5-mile paved trail circles the lake’s perimeter. Amenities include picnic areas, a boathouse, fishing pier, and boat launch. Three golf courses surround the park. But to top off the experience for your furry friend, the Lake Merced Dog Play Area is located in the northeastern corner of the park. Lake Merced Park is a definite go-to spot for you and your nature loving pup!
