Wag! Walkers know Little Saigon
Little Saigon is a tiny neighborhood in Tenderloin that owes its existence to the Vietnamese in the Bay area who longed for a piece of home in San Francisco. You will find residents in Little Saigon, but you will find so much more as the culture of this neighborhood spills beyond its tiny borders. You can be sure if you live down here that a walk with your pup through this neighborhood will be a cultural extravaganza. Food and drink are everywhere for hungry dog walkers, and for your furry companion, there are pet stores within easy reach even if this tiny area has none of its own. Veterinarians are even easier to find and, like pet stores, groomers are within reach.
Weather is perfect for the daily walker. With such mild year-round temperatures, the only days you may not feel like walking are when Pacific storms make their way on shore.
What is the terrain like in Little Saigon?
Little Saigon is an urban area. Don’t spend too much time looking for a patch of grass around here, because you are lucky to find a few trees in most areas. The area is also quite flat, so at least using Little Saigon as a starting point, you will not have to worry about any hills. The problem is, Little Saigon’s borders are probably not big enough for a long walk. It is more than likely that you will find yourself walking through the rest of the Tenderloin area.
Much of this area is also part of the diverse Vietnamese neighborhood, so unless you are on the council which established Little Saigon, you won't even know you have strayed. As you head out of the neighborhood, you might find some elevation changes, especially to the west, and there are a few parks along many of the routes that will offer something more than concrete city sidewalks.
How many greenways are there in Little Saigon?
With two square city blocks in each direction, it is pretty certain you will not find any patches of green. This area is all row-style apartments with no yards and the sidewalks do not have any grass either. But as you head east or west, you will find a couple of larger parks that are designated greenways your pup might enjoy.
The Father Alfred E. Boeddeker Park to the east has small patches of grass for a little bit of exercise. To the west is Jefferson Square Park which is much larger and also includes paths, some benches, and a few shady trees. There are plenty of other parks and greenways throughout the neighboring areas, but many of them will require a car in order to reach them. Lafayette Park to the north is probably close enough to walk to if you are in a good shape and is one of the larger parks in the area.
