Wag! Walkers know Mastro
Mastro refers to the neighborhood stretching from 20th Street to Market Street, bordered by Dolores to the East and Sanchez, 17th, and Church Street on the west side. That means it shares an edge with the Duboce Triangle and is sandwiched between the Castro and Mission District. This small area includes blocks of residential complexes, a few commercial zones, an elementary, middle, and high school, and the dog-friendly Mission Delores Park. You can expect the weather to stay in a really enjoyable range all year, with a high of about 70° and a low around 46°. If you need a snack, there are some restaurants and cafes with patios toward the northern border of the area that you can check out. Some may allow you to sit outside with your pup and have a relaxing outing. Just keep in mind that on hotter days, the pavement may be a little warm for sensitive paw pads.
What is the terrain like in Mastro?
The blocks in Mastro are highly residential with plenty of space for housing. Expect mostly artificial terrain made up of churches, apartment buildings, and duplexes as you stroll through the neighborhood. Trees are scattered along the sidewalks, but for the most part, the walk will entail direct sunlight which can get a bit warm! At least until you get to the park. Make sure you take care of your own skin and be careful of your doggie’s feet if it’s an especially sunny day!
Enjoy the colorful, Victorian rowhouses along your way, but keep in mind, there’s not much grass for your dog’s needs, so try to make a greenway or park or your final destination. As is the norm with San Francisco, the streets are on hillsides. You can expect a few blocks climbing and falling, so plan your routes accordingly, especially for pups that struggle with more difficult terrain.
How many greenways are there in Mastro?
At the south side of the neighborhood, just a few blocks from pretty much any starting point in Mastro is a 16-acre park called Mission Delores Park. It’s about a block wide and two blocks long, located across the street from Mission Delores High School. The park has a beautiful expansive lawn on a hill which is perfect for a nice restful lounge with your pup! With a beautiful view of the city and lots of palm trees and park benches, you should really enjoy this spot. It even has an off-leash dog area which allows your dog plenty of opportunities for socialization and playtime with other local pooches! Note that there is a playground in the park, so if your companion for the day has sensitivities to small children, steer clear from the southernmost part of the park for this reason. Otherwise, remember to be courteous to other visitors!
