North Beach is a small community with a diverse group of residents and an even more diverse group of visitors. One of the first things you will notice about this area is the density of the all the retail businesses, eateries, and coffee shops. It is impossible to not find a bite to eat or something to do or look at as this neighborhood was built for walkers. Choose from enjoying Little Italy, the steps of San Francisco, walking down the oldest street in the city, or strolling down the Barbary Coast. Even Fido’s needs are not neglected with easy access to pet stores and groomers within walking distance either in North Beach or just outside the boundaries.

While San Francisco weather is typically cool and mild, here you are likely to see more in the way of wind and slightly chillier temperatures thanks to its location. Still, there are few days when a short walk is not possible.

North Beach has a little bit of everything when it comes to terrain, regardless of fitness level and goals. If you are a casual dog walker, you will find strolls along the beach front or along Taylor Street to be relaxing and offer lots to see and do. Through the south-central area, there is a large bluff which also is home to the famous stairs of San Francisco which provide more challenging walks for those who want a bit of exercise. There are also plenty of hills on the back side of the bluff that are just as challenging.

Walking surfaces are entirely concrete and there are only a few trees, so if you are looking for places where your pup can sniff some grass, you may need to do some extra walking. Still, there is lots to see and do when strolling through this area of San Francisco so your dog may not mind the lack of greenery.

There are a number of small greenways scattered around North Beach that do give you an opportunity to enjoy a bit of grass between your toes and a chance for Fido to romp. Pioneer Park is on top of the bluff along with Coit Tower and has the largest amount of trees and grass in the neighborhood. The park and the tower offer great views of the city and the bay, but it is likely the large quantity of trees and grass that will get your pup’s attention.

Washington Square is a popular place to walk dogs due to the large lawn that is situated in front of Saint Peter & Paul’s Church. There are also some sidewalk cafes you can stop at if you need a bite to eat.

Just to the south of Pier 39 is another park area which also has a large grassy space and lots of benches if you would like to stop for a break.
