Wag! Walkers know Richmond District
The Richmond District is a large neighborhood that occupies the upper northwest corner of San Francisco. It contains 4 smaller sub-neighborhoods including Lake Street, Inner Richmond, Outer Richmond, and Central Richmond. Some areas of the Richmond District are more upscale with wealthy families residing in Victorian homes, where others are more known for their commercial thoroughfares with options for dining, drinking, and shopping. The main three thoroughfares in the district are Balboa Street, Geary Boulevard, and California Street.
San Francisco is famous for its unique climate where temperatures hardly ever dip below 50 degrees or climb higher than 70. Its location right on the San Francisco Bay causes the city to experience constant wind from mild to intense. Because of this, you will want to take the proper precautions to keep yourself and your dog warm if you decide to go for a walk on a particularly cold or windy day.
What is the terrain like in Richmond District?
San Francisco is a famously hilly city known for streets lined with businesses and homes that are built into a landscape of rolling hills and steep inclines. The Richmond District has many of the same characteristics, but is not as dramatically hilly as some other areas of the city. Geary Boulevard, the biggest thoroughfare in the neighborhood, stays relatively flat all throughout the center of the district. However, if you turn to the south, you will find yourself going up some slight inclines and the opposite is true of most of the roads just north of Geary.
The atmosphere is pleasant and somewhat of a mix between urban and suburban. There are tons of homes tightly packed together on tree-lined streets, as well as lots of popular night life attractions on the main drags, meaning foot and street traffic can often be heavy closer to normal rush hour times.
How many greenways are there in Richmond District?
Due to the size of the Richmond District, there are countless greenways and playgrounds to be found. Within the bounds of the neighborhood, there are several small parks such as Fulton Playground, Cabrillo Playground, and Argonne Playground. These are all small parks of relatively similar size, located throughout the neighborhood. Argonne Playground, situated in the very center of the district, has multiple picnic tables, athletic fields, and a large grassy lawn for dogs to play on.
The bigger draw of the Richmond District lies all around its borders which are the many enormous national parks of San Francisco. To the north of the district is Presidio National Park, which spans for 2.4 square miles and connects to the Golden Gate Bridge. There is also Golden Gate National Park which is right on the southern border of the Richmond District and offers just as much to explore as Presidio National Park.
