Wag! Walkers know Mesa Grande

On the western outskirts of Grande Junction, Colorado, Mesa Grande Drive winds up into the hills on the eastern slopes of the foothills, leading up to the Colorado Rrockies between Colorado and Utah, just to the south of the James M. Robb Colorado State Park. Grande Junction rests along the Colorado River and is surrounded by US Federal Reserve Land. Mesa Grande is nestled right in the middle of this wilderness area. This is some of the most scenic landscape anywhere in North America. Great for walking your dog, and enjoying some of the spectacular mountain scenery and fresh air in the US! In addition to fantastic natural terrain, you can find veterinary clinics, pet supply stores, and grooming salons are available across the river in the central part of Grande Junction.

The climate here is semi-arid, with little rain--that means lots of sun for great views and no need to bring a rain coat. However,  it can get cold here in the winter, although the climate is warmer here in winter than many locations at this altitude, and in their proximity to the mountains. Still, winter will mean wearing warm clothes to go walking with your pooch, and if it is snowing, which it may be, your pooch may need a winter coat too!

What is the terrain like in Mesa Grande?

The Mesa Grande Drive neighborhood boasts beautiful single family homes on the eastern slopes of the Rocky Mountains. Surrounded by steep, hilly wilderness, and cliffs, this semi-arid landscape is rugged, beautiful and quite wild. If you like natural beauty this is the place for you and your dog. Be sure to bring stout hiking boots if you are going hiking in the surrounding natural areas, to keep your ankles from turning and to protect from rattlesnakes. Although these creatures are shy and not generally considered aggressive, if your dog startles a rattlesnake there could be an incident, so be vigilant when hiking in the reserve areas around Mesa Grande. Mesa Grande itself is on an incline and does not have paved sidewalks in many parts, which will require you to walk on the road when walking through the residential area. Watch out for traffic, remember to walk facing traffic along with your dog, and keep your dog on a leash to avoid him wandering out onto the roadway. Traffic is very light in this residential neighborhood but caution is important when pedestrian ways are not well defined.

How many greenways are there in Mesa Grande?

Mesa Grande Drive is surrounded by green,  or rather, browny-green, due to the arid to semi-arid nature of the surrounding wilderness. Also, rocks! Lots of big rocks! Great for climbing on and taking in the breathtaking scenery.  Mesa Grande drive itself, however, boasts many lush yard sites and surrounding treed areas with well-developed shade trees. Nearby James M. Robb Colorado River State Park has many paved trails and hiking trails, as well as lakes, campgrounds, picnic areas and wonderful wilderness areas. This area contains rough terrain, spectacular views, and plenty of wildlife. There are amazing natural sights to see, and both long and short trails for hiking. If you and your dog are the adventurous sort, be prepared with water, snacks, and gear you may need for changes in the weather along wilderness hikes through rough terrain, elevations changes, and a chance of wildlife encounters.  Don't forget a camera, you will want to record your walk for sure.
