Wag! Walkers know Steamboat

If you are lucky enough to live in Steamboat or visit here during the summer months, you and your dog have access to miles and miles of dog-walking, running, and hiking paradise. This mountain town was made for active dogs and their loving owners, and many locals truly feel spoiled by the ability to get out in the mountains right from the middle of town.

If you're looking to challenge your fitness and breathe in the mountain air, you'll have ample opportunity to work hard, sweat, and chase your happy dog's wagging tail up challenging mountain trails. If you want something more low key and you have an older or smaller dog who prefers a gentle amble, there are plenty of those trails too. It's the perfect place to wake up and decide what you want to do based on your mood, activity level or time constraints. It's truly good to be a dog owner, or a dog, in this outdoorsy mountain town.

What is the terrain like in Steamboat?

You'll never forget that you are in the mountains in Steamboat, and for this reason it's important to know what you're getting into on any walk or hike. There are plenty of natural hiking trails maintained by the forest service that can take you to amazing vistas and challenge you with rocky, dirt trails. Be prepared by always wearing sturdy hiking boots or shoes, carrying plenty of water or snacks for you and your dog, and consulting a map so you know where you're going.

There are a few easier town trails you can walk along if you want something tamer or a short excursion before work. Though these trails are still mostly natural or hard packed dirt, they are much flatter and follow creeks, often weaving in and out of neighborhoods. Most the trails around Steamboat are multi-use and popular with lots of people. Be aware of bikers, other hikers and dogs, and even equestrians.

How many greenways are there in Steamboat?

If you're looking for an easy and family friendly dog walk, try out the Spring Creek trail in downtown Steamboat. The trail is wide and well maintained though still dirt so you can push a stroller but the track will be gentle on your dog's paws. The trail is short at .5 miles long and leads to the Spring Creek Park with a few pavilions and two ponds to play in. You can continue up the trail through a shady canyon where your dog can cool off in the creek.

For a big challenge close to downtown, head to Emerald Mountain. There are several trails that offer 10 miles of challenging terrain. This hike is popular with locals and offers a beautiful and rewarding view looking across to Steamboat Mountain resort. If your dog loves to run and you enjoy a challenge, this is the perfect trail for the both of you.
