Wag! Walkers know Walton Creek

Steamboat Springs is one of the best places for dogs! This ski town tucked into the mountains of Colorado offers any kind of romp your dog could ask for. From cross-country skiing in winter to endless nearby hiking opportunities in summer, Steamboat Springs is a dog's dream and a dog lover's paradise.

In addition to all the outdoor pursuits you can experience with your four-legged friend outside of town, there are also great trails steps outside your door to go for a quick walk or jog year round. One of the most popular trails for locals and tourists alike is the Walton Creek trail. Situated close to the downtown and ski resorts, this trail winds its way along Walton Creek. This trail is popular with hikers, bikers, dog-walkers, and equestrians alike, so make sure your dog is well trained on the leash and be prepared to meet a variety of new friends out enjoying the outdoors.

What is the terrain like in Walton Creek?

This dirt trail is also popular with bike commuters heading to work in the heart of Steamboat and mountain bikers on their way to ride the trails. The trail is fairly wide and mostly natural or gravel, so you shouldn't have a problem sharing the space. It's a well-loved trail that connects several neighborhoods from River Creek Park to Whistler Park with the heart of Steamboat. The path is a moderate grade, but many mountain bikers ride the trail all the way to a steep climb at the end.

Walton Creek Trail is maintained by the city, but expect it to be hard packed and in a natural state. If you are used to city walking make sure you wear sturdy shoes in summer and boots in the winter and bring water for yourself. Your dog will be delighted to take a dip in the creek on hot days and tromp in the snow during the winter.

How many greenways are there in Walton Creek?

Whether you are visiting Steamboat or have lived here for a while, the Walton Creek trail will soon become a well-loved town favorite. This trail is perfect for fitness walking because the uneven terrain will challenge you and keep you (and your dog) at attention. It's also a great after-work stroll to let the tensions of the day wash away with the splashing of the creek, especially if your best buddy is the one making the splashing noises.

This trail truly is the pathway between downtown and the more residential areas. Make a puppy playdate with friends in River Creek or Whistler park and meet up on the trail. If you have a more active dog, you can enjoy a nice run on the joint-friendly dirt path while your pup works out his energy. You'll see every kind of outdoor-loving dog and person (and the occasional horse) so this trail is best for well trained and friendly dogs.
