Taking your Christmassy canine for walkies in the nation’s capital is tons of fun, with dozens of Christmas light displays illuminating the city. With so many options, you may be wondering where the best spots are for a festive frolic with your holiday hound. Here are 5 of the best Christmas holiday lights in Washington D.C. to walk your dog to.
Take your pup for a stroll through President’s Park to enjoy one of the best Christmas trees in the country. The National Christmas Tree is a century-old tradition, with the president lighting the tree each year in early December. The highlight is the handmade ornaments from each of the 56 U.S. territories. After admiring the National Christmas Tree, take Gromit for a leashed walk around The Ellipse.
One of the best neighborhood Christmas light displays is in Columbia Heights. You and your merry mutt will love strutting your stuff down Columbia Heights’ main street, admiring all the businesses and upscale houses kitted out with a variety of different Christmas lights and decorations. Before seeing the lights, consider taking your pup for an off-leash walk at Walter C Pierce Dog Park.
A riverside ramble with your woofer over the holidays is sure to get you in the festive spirit. The Wharf is a very dog-friendly neighborhood, and pups are welcome waterside as long as they remain on a leash. Along the Wharf’s 45-foot pier is a beautifully decorated Christmas tree, and the Wharf itself is also tastefully decorated with ornaments and lights.
Another DC neighborhood transformed into a winter wonderland each year is Mount Pleasant. This north DC neighborhood is proud of its dazzling main street, with each store front boasting beautiful Christmas decorations throughout the whole of December.
No Christmas is complete without a visit to the local Christmas market, and you'll find one superb option at The REACH at the Kennedy Center. Your pup can accompany you to this Christmas market as long as they stay on a leash at all times on a Washington dog walk. Pick up some last-minute Christmas gifts from the boutique stalls, or wander around and admire the decorations while sipping on mulled wine and chowing down on a variety of light bites.
