Wag! Walkers know Carver

Carver is a small neighborhood located on the east side of Washington, D.C. that is often considered to be combined with the adjacent Langston neighborhood and referred to as Carver-Langston. Carver is the northernmost area and is mostly residential, however, there are many restaurants, coffee shops, and other services located on the northwest border along Bladensburg Road that residents can easily reach on foot.

Dog walkers in Carver will experience a variety of weather conditions throughout the year. Winters have light snowfall and chilly, sub-freezing temperatures. Avoid more severe winter weather when it occurs by finding games to play with your dog indoors for exercise. Summers are humid and dogs and owners should take precautions to avoid overexposure to heat by walking at cooler times of day and seeking shade. You won't be hit by much direct dry heat in this area, but the humidity can make it difficult to get out and about.

What is the terrain like in Carver?

Carver is a small triangular-shaped neighborhood bordered by M Street and the National Arboretum on the north side, Maryland Avenue on the southeast, and Bladensburg Road on the west. Its sister neighborhood, Langston, is located across Maryland Avenue and the area is often considered to be one neighborhood.

The Arboretum on the north side is a prominent landscape feature with wooded areas on the community's border. The Carver area also has trees along residential streets and landscaped properties. The west side of Carver is mostly row houses, densely packed on narrow, one-way streets, while the east side has low rise apartment buildings that are part of a large complex with communal lawns and adjoining pedestrian paths. Construction in the area is predominantly brick.

There are sidewalks and grass berms located throughout the neighborhood providing safe, separate pedestrian ways for pup and pets. The terrain has some inclines and slopes, although these are not steep or difficult to climb up.

How many greenways are there in Carver?

The National Arboretum is conveniently located on the north border of Carver. This greenway has beautifully tended ornamental gardens and treed areas that are a sort of living museum. The park allows dogs on the paved paths, providing they are kept on a leash.

The Kingsman Field Dog Park is located to the south several blocks, but can be reached on foot. This park has two separate off-leash areas that are fully enclosed for different sizes of dogs. The park is gravel surfaced and waste bags and facilities are provided in the park. There is also a doggie water fountain for hot days and often extra toys in the park for your pet to play with.

Just southeast of Carver, the Kingsman and Heritage Island Parks are located along Kingsman Lake and the Anacostia River. These parks offer large greenways near the water with lots of trails to stroll with your furry friend.
