Wag! Walkers know Colonial Village

Colonial Village is a residential neighborhood located in the northern corner of Washington, D.C. This more upscale neighborhood is largely composed of standalone, single-family homes with expansive lawns. Commercially, there is not much in Colonial Village, but you will find access to public transportation, a school, and a Jewish synagogue. Residents will need to leave the neighborhood to find other necessities like banks, gas stations, or grocery stores.

Washington, D.C. was founded after the American Revolution as the nation's capitol. This was to ensure that no singular state would have the honor and power associated with the country's capitol. Throughout the city, which is one of the most visited by both American and international tourists, you will find plenty of national landmarks like memorials or monuments, different history, art, cultural, and science museums, a famous performing arts center, the home of the nation's three branches of government, and unique neighborhoods known for their distinct cultures and personalities.

What is the terrain like in Colonial Village?

Colonial Village is a true suburb of the more urban Washington, D.C. While it is largely artificial and manicured terrain, the access to Rock Creek Park gives this neighborhood a bit more suburban vibe that the rest of the city. Because of this unique blend, however, you will find plenty of well-maintained sidewalks for you and your pup to use as well as large, mature trees to provide some much-needed shade.

Additionally, like many D.C. suburbs, Colonial Village has a few hills throughout its borders. If either you or your pup have any mobility issues, research your walking routes before heading out the door!

The boundaries of Colonial Village include East Beach Drive to the north, 16th Street to the east, Rock Creek Park to the south, and the Maryland-Washington, D.C. border to the west. Primrose Road and West Beach Drive are main roadways through Colonial Village and may have more traffic than other areas of the neighborhood.

How many greenways are there in Colonial Village?

Part of the famous Rock Creek Park, which is owned and operated by the U.S. National Park Service, is located in the southern part of this neighborhood. This 1,700-acre national park is a little natural paradise in the middle of the urban D.C. environment. Rock Creek Park provides countless opportunities for you and your pup to explore the many miles of walking and running trails. Rock Creek Park also has a pup park!

Other nearby parks are smaller and typically just have playgrounds, a few benches, and maybe a short walking path. These parks include Shepherd Soccer Field, King Street Community Garden, Jesup Blair Local Park, Acorn Park, Rosemary Hills-Lyttonsville Local Park, Woodside Park, and Fairview Road Urban Park.

Just a mile and a half to the northeast, you will find the Ellsworth Urban Dog Park. This park is open from sunrise to sunset, has separate, enclosed spaces for both large and small breeds, a drinking fountain, and places for you to rest while your pup runs around.
