Wag! Walkers know Columbia Heights
Columbia Heights is a diverse neighborhood located in Washington, D.C. This community is a highly walkable district with historic buildings and a thriving entertainment scene. Theatres, eateries, bars, nightclubs, unique shops, and retail outlets are located within walking distance in the area. A concentration of restaurants and bars on 11th Street is referred to as the 11th Street Corridor or the Columbia Heights Hip Strip. There is also a community center with reception facilities located nearby.

Washington weather is characterized by hot, humid summers and cold, snowy winters. Summer heat can be an issue for dog walkers. Severe thunderstorms can also pose a hazard, so avoid them when they occur. Winters see daily temperatures dip below freezing at night and occasional snowfall. During the late summer and fall, hurricanes are also possible, although they are usually not strong. You should still be aware of and prepared for inclement weather by checking forecasts.
What is the terrain like in Columbia Heights?
Columbia Heights is a developed urban neighborhood with some multi-story buildings and many two-story structures. It is bordered on the west by 16th Street, on the north by Spring Road, on the east by Sherman Avenue, and the south by Florida Avenue. There are several public transportation lines in the area, so pedestrians need to watch for trains when traversing the district.

This neighborhood is very diverse with different residential buildings and businesses. Dwellings consist of condominiums, townhouses, public housing, moderate single-family homes, and mansions. Many buildings are historic with interesting architectural features. There is a little of everything!  Properties are well landscaped and streets are lined with grassy boulevards and separate sidewalks for pedestrians and pets, so you don't have to share the road with local traffic.

The area boasts views of Washington D.C.’s downtown skyline. The terrain is relatively level with no steep hills and only some gentle inclines to trek up and down.
How many greenways are there in Columbia Heights?
The Columbia Heights Dog Park, also called 11th and Bark, is an off-leash dog area. The park is enclosed, but does not have separate areas for large and small dogs or a double-gated entry, so use with caution if you have a shy dog ar an escape artist!
Meridian Hill Park is situated on approximately 12 acres and has a cascading fountain and several unique statues to visit. The greenway has open and treed areas and lots of paved footpaths. A few blocks east is the small, but active Bruce Monroe Community Park. This park has tennis and basketball courts, a playground, and a community garden.
Rock Creek Park and the Piney Branch Park are located just northwest of Columbia Heights. With 1,754 acres of open and wooded areas, there is lots to explore with your adventurous pup. There are 32 miles of hiking trails with beautiful landscapes and various terrain, but watch out for cyclists and joggers!
