Friendship Heights is both a residential and commercial neighborhood and is located on the Washington, D.C.-Maryland border. Commercially, this neighborhood is home to the corporate headquarters of both GEICO and the Ritz-Carlton hotel chains. You will also find local restaurants, a shopping complex, and several upscale clothing stores. Friendship Heights even has its own stop on the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority, or METRO.
Residentially, Friendship Heights is composed of rather large, standalone, single-family homes. However, there are a few apartment complexes and condos for rent in the area.
The boundaries of Friendship Heights include Western Avenue to the northwest, 41st Street and Belt Road to the east, Chesapeake Street to the south, and River Road to the southwest. Wisconsin Avenue is the one major roadway that runs through Friendship Heights and many of the commercial locations are on this street, so there may be heavy traffic in the area that you'll want to avoid while walking with your pup.
Other nearby greenways include Brookdale Neighborhood Park, Vinton Park, Fort Bayard Park, Boundary Park Neighborhood Conservation Area, and Fort Reno Park. Most of these greenways are smaller and have playgrounds, an area to sit, and paved walking paths.
If those parks still don't bring enough adventure, Rock Creek Park is only a mile and a half to the east. Rock Creek Park is the largest greenway in the Washington, D.C. area and is overseen by the National Park Service. It is extremely popular with runners, cyclists, hikers, and dog walkers! Others enjoy horseback riding, canoeing, or picnicking in Rock Creek Park. Your pup is welcomed, but should be leashed at all times and you should always make sure to clean up after them.
