Wag! Walkers know Georgetown
Georgetown is a centrally located neighborhood just west of Washington's central business district. This community is a highly walkable historic district with a large variety of on foot destinations. Hip restaurants and high-end shops, as well as a vibrant nightlife and entertainment district are located along primary commercial corridors such as Wisconsin Avenue and M Street at the shopping mall and in the waterfront district. There are also hotels, libraries, historical landmarks, a recreation center, foreign embassies, art galleries, and the Georgetown University campus located in the neighborhood, all accessible on a stroll with your pet.

Cold Washington winters with sub-freezing temperatures and snow require warm outerwear while traveling on foot. Good footwear and avoiding icy sections of walkways is advised. Summers are hot and humid and you should avoid walking in the heat of the day as it is uncomfortable for you and your pet. Avoid summer thunderstorms, occasional winter blizzards, or Atlantic storms when they are occurring by taking shelter.
What is the terrain like in Georgetown?
Georgetown is situated on the north banks of the Potomac River. Foundry Branch Valley Park sits along the community's west side and Rock Creek Park is on the east with the Burleith-Hillandale neighborhood on the north. Because it is surrounded by parkland, this neighborhood has a very tranquil, park-like feel and it is separate from the hustle and bustle of some of the adjacent neighborhoods and areas.

This region features several historic landmarks and buildings and homes exhibit historic character with Federal-style architecture and cobblestone streets and sidewalks that add to the regional charm. The neighborhood does, however, have some hills and steep sections as it is situated on high ground overlooking the river. There is a famous staircase that helps pedestrians and pets navigate the area by connecting M Street and Prospect Street.

Although residential streets are lined with historic single-family homes and row houses, main thoroughfares and the waterfront are more heavily trafficked by pedestrians and vehicles and attract tourists to the area.
How many greenways are there in Georgetown?
The waterfront and numerous parks are graced with plenty of pedestrians trails which are ideal for walking with your furry friend. The Rose Park Recreation Center and grounds have access to the Rock Creek Park trails. Rock Creek trails extend to the north along Rock Creek to the larger Rock Creek natural areas which provide 2,000 acres of natural space and trails to explore with your pet.
Closer to home is the Georgetown Waterfront Park. This 10-acre park is situated on the Potomac River with views of the waterway and the surrounding urban areas. This park has plenty of open and wooded areas with walking paths throughout. The park is very active and busy with lots of users.
Foundry Branch River Park and Glover Archbold Park are located on the west side of Georgetown. This heavily wooded ravine and greenway are situated along a tributary of the Potomac River and provide natural space with a thick tree canopy, perfect for walking on hot summer days.
