Wag! Walkers know Northeast Boundary
Northeast Boundary is, as the name implies, a community located in the northeast quadrant of Washington, D.C. The community has schools and churches, as well as a recreation center available for pedestrians to access. A small commercial area is on the northeast side of the community and has some shops and services that are also accessible on foot.

Locals with dogs that take their pets out regularly for walks will experience a variety of weather throughout the year and should be aware of changing conditions. Make sure you have an insulated winter coat and footwear with good traction for cold, snowy walks. Blizzards are rare, but when occasional severe winter weather hits, you may want to postpone long walks until the system clears the area. Summer days present a different hazard. Walking at cooler times of the day and keeping you and your pet well hydrated will help prevent heat-related illnesses.
What is the terrain like in Northeast Boundary?
The neighborhood of Northeast Boundary is bordered by Eastern Avenue and the Maryland border on the northeast side, Nannie Helen Burroughs Avenue on the north side, Division Avenue on the west side, and Watts Branch Creek which runs along the south border.

The Watts Branch is surrounded by a natural ravine and wooded area and has natural terrain, the conditions of which may vary with wet weather, so use caution. Most of the Northeast Boundary district is a developed, residential, and urban setting, and paved sidewalks and grass berms are available for pedestrians and pets so they don't have to share the road with local traffic.

Homes in the area consist of apartment buildings, public housing complexes, and single-family dwellings. The area is well landscaped with mature shade trees and lawns on private and public properties and along quiet streets. The area is hilly, and if you stroll with your dog around the Northeast Boundary neighborhood, you will need to climb up and down some hills.
How many greenways are there in Northeast Boundary?
The Marvin Gaye Park is situated on the east side of the community with some open areas and a monument to the singer. This section of the park has recreational centers, sports facilities, and fields. The greenway extends to the east for 1.6 miles through the neighborhood and along the Watts Branch Creek. The greenway has a hiking and cycling trail which connects the eastern Marvin Gaye recreational area to the Watts Branch Playground on the southeast side of the neighborhood. This greenway has a playground, sports facilities, and fields for residents to enjoy.

Taking your dog for a walk along the trail between the two recreational areas is a great idea as this beautiful naturally wooded area has lots of trees providing shelter. The main hiking trail is not as affected by wet conditions, although side trails in the area can become treacherous in wet weather and pet owners should exercise caution while investigating near the creek or in the natural wooded areas.
