Wag! Walkers know Park View

Parkview is a community located centrally in Washington, D.C. The district is within walking distance of Howard University which is located just south of Park View and there are several schools in the neighborhood within walking distance. Georgia Avenue is the main commercial thoroughfare and has several shops, services, and local eateries located along it that pedestrians and pets can reach on foot.

If you enjoy daily walks with your canine companion, you will need to avoid some inclement weather in the Washington, D.C. area. Summers see frequent storms. Thunder can be frightening to some dogs, so take shelter when these storms are imminent. Rainy days in spring and fall also occur, although if precipitation is not heavy, you and your pup can still venture out with appropriate rain gear. Cold winters with some snowfall are the norm in the capitol region. Having a warm coat and footwear will allow you to continue regular walks, even during winter months.

What is the terrain like in Park View?

Park View is bordered by Rock Creek Church Road on the north side, Park Place on the east, Gresham Place on the south side, and Sherman Avenue on the west side. The terrain is relatively level with only some gentle inclines that are not too difficult for most pedestrians and pets to manage.

There are some historic buildings in the area including the Tenth Precinct Station House, an elementary school building, and a former theatre which is now a church that boasts some interesting architecture. Most of the area is made up of residential housing. There are low rise apartments, row houses, and some single-family detached dwellings. Homes are attractive and situated on well-landscaped properties.

Trees, grassy berms, and sidewalks line residential roads and create safe places for you and your pup to take a stroll on the quieter residential streets. The main commercial thoroughfare of Georgia Avenue bisects the community from north to south and has less landscaping and more traffic.

How many greenways are there in Park View?

You and your furry friend can travel on foot a few blocks to the west to access the Columbia Heights Dog Park. This enclosed off-leash dog park provides a great spot for your pup to play.  It does not have separate areas for large and small dogs, nor does it have a double-gated entry system, so if your dog is very small, shy, or an escape artist, you will want to visit at less busy times and supervise closely. All dogs should be well socialized and monitored while using the park.

The Bruce Monroe Community Park is situated on the south side of Park View. This park has a community garden, basketball and tennis courts, a playground, and some open areas with paved paths where you can take a stroll with your pet.

The Wangari Gardens located on the east side of Park View also provides community gardens, more open space, and a paved walking trail to visit with your leashed pup.
