When strolling with your pup in the district, you should be prepared for some wet weather and some severe weather conditions. Winters are usually cold with sub-freezing temperatures and some light snow. A warm jacket and good footwear will allow you to navigate the city walkways and stay warm. Don't forget, your furry friend may need some extra insulation too! Summers are humid with severe thunderstorms occasionally. Take shelter when storms are imminent and avoid walking during the height of the day when temperatures are at their highest. Have rain gear for showers so you can stay dry when the weather produces wet conditions.
This is a highly residential neighborhood with single-family homes. There is a retirement community and grounds on the east side, but most of the area is comprised of beautiful houses on well landscaped and maintained properties. Large trees line roadways and are present on private properties, making this a very shady and green community. Sidewalks and grass berms run along streets, so you and your pup won't have to share the road with local traffic. You should still keep your dog leashed and clean up after your pet to keep in good with your neighbors!
The terrain has some gentle inclines, but no steep hills so people and pets of all ability levels can get around easily on foot.
The Rock Creek Park is the dominant feature on the east side of the Upper Chevy Chase community. Residents can access the main Rock Creek Trail and the Western Ridge Trail which run near the border of the park and the Upper Chevy Chase community. The park has over 1,700 acres and many miles of interconnecting trails to explore with your dog. Heavily wooded areas, natural open areas, the creek, and tributaries make this park beautiful and provide a home for local critters. Your dog must remain leashed. This will keep them from running after small animals in the area and disturbing or running into other passerby.
For shorter walks in a smaller greenway, visit the Lafayette Recreation Center and green space on the southwest side of Upper Chevy Chase. This park has tennis and basketball courts, lots of beautiful trees, and some paved pedestrians paths in and around it.
