Wag! Walkers know Wakefield
Wakefield is an affluent residential neighborhood located on the northwest side of Washington, D.C. There is a small commercial area on the north end of the neighborhood where residents can find a variety of services, including a bookstore, coffee shop, convenience store, liquor store, pharmacy, and other unique shops. A local veterinarian is located south of Wakefield on Connecticut Avenue about 30 minutes away. Other commercial areas in adjacent neighborhoods are also within walking distance and residents of the neighborhood can enjoy several destinations on foot.

When traveling on foot, you will enjoy plenty of temperate, sunny days, ideal for walking, but rainy days are also common and winters are cold with snowy conditions. Have rain gear and warm winter gear to stay comfortable in less than ideal weather conditions and so your dog does not miss a daily outing. Sometimes, severe storms occur and walking should be postponed when high winds, extreme cold, or heavy rain occurs.
What is the terrain like in Wakefield?
Wakefield is a triangular shaped neighborhood with Nebraska Avenue on the west side, Connecticut Avenue on the east, and Albemarle Street on the south side. This community is a mostly residential neighborhood developed in the 1930s and structures are mainly of brick construction.
Homes are predominantly single-family dwellings and home prices are quite high, as this is considered an affluent district. There is an apartment complex on the north side providing alternative accommodation options.
Most of the area has gentle hills that are not overly steep and most pedestrians and pets can negotiate the region without difficulty. Neighborhood trees create a shady canopy over residential roads and landscaping is so thick on private property, it can be difficult to make out the homes. Streets have sidewalks running along them, so you and your pup won't have to share the road with local traffic. Crosswalks at intersections are well marked, even on residential streets, to aid pedestrians and pets in safely crossing them.
How many greenways are there in Wakefield?
The Soapstone Valley Park is a large wooded park on the ravine of a Rock Creek tributary. The park and trails here connect on the east side to the larger Rock Creek Park and trail system. This park system has 200 acres of beautifully forested greenway with streams, historical sites, and recreational facilities. The extensive trail system runs for miles. This park is federally owned and maintained and your pooch must remain on a leash in the area.
Fort Reno Park can be reached on foot, a few blocks to the west of Wakefield. This park is located on elevated ground as it was a former civil war earthworks location and exploring the park will require some uphill treks. The park has numerous sports fields and facilities and a concert stage where events take place in warmer weather. Paved paths in this greenway are a good place for a leashed stroll with your furry friend.
