Sarasota, do you know how your city was named? Legend has it, it was named after the daughter (Sara) of the conquistador, DeStoa.
One of the city’s main goals is to be clean and aesthetically pleasing –so it makes perfect sense that it’s beautiful and filled with a lot of greenery, lots of space for outdoor activities. This pretty city is warm and welcoming to travelers, families, and furry friends who make the day-to-day routine much sweeter.
Sarasota is home to several animal rescues including Satchel’s Last Resort which focuses on giving dogs who have been deemed unadoptable a home! This shelter provides a safe place for its residents and temporary animals—so it’s like a little resort!
Another shelter worth mentioning is the Royal Pet Rescue Inc. Have you looked at all their beautiful doggies? Some of them have been abandoned and need some serious cuddle time. The organization got their not-for-profit designation to save more animals, and has since rescued over 2000! They take care of all the spaying/neutering, bathing, and medical needs so that your pup is ready to go once you meet them. Sarasota has so much to offer, so why not offer these little furry friends a chance to tour the beautiful city with their new best friend (you!)?
The Sarasota Pets Festival is an annual festival that takes place in February—just in time for Valentine’s Day! We just know you want to spend it with your lovely dog. This fair takes place at the Sarasota County Fairgrounds and has some great events and challenges for doggies! The Dock Diving Competition, Weave-Pole Competition, and The Agility Demonstrations are just some of the fun you can find while you're there. There are also over 150 vendor booths ready to cater to you and your little love. This sounds like the perfect Valentine’s celebration to us, so come check it out!
Jingle Bells, Jingle Bells, Jingle all the way! Come on out to Jingle Paws Jubilee and sing all the carols you want. The event is held at Phillippi Estate Park, and is ready to entertain you with holiday costume contests, photos with Santa, holiday music, vendors, raffle prizes and more! The event is free, but all attendees are asked to bring a canned or bagged dog or cat food, toys or treats as this event is to help local animal shelters—Just tell your pup that sharing is caring, and have them pick out a toy to donate to their furry community.
So, we’ve all played dress up at some point in our lives, but how fun is it to dress up your dog as a cute little pumpkin, or hot dog, or even…a CAT! Well, you now have a chance to win prizes for playing dress up with your pup! Just stop by Dog-a-ween to be a part of the pet costume parade, and enter for a chance to win some cash prizes. This event is hosted at the Sarasota’s Farmer’s Market, and treats will be around for both you and your dog…err ‘cat’.
Christmas - a time to spoil all your loved ones, keep your dog away from the tree, and your kids away from the gifts. Canine Christmas is an annual event meant to celebrate family time, let you pick up some unique gifts, try local food, and put your pet in the Doggie Fashion show. Yup, you read that right! You can check out Canine Christmas for these fun daytime activities, and even get a family photo with Santa ( maybe keep the doggie clothing on your pup, especially if they're looked dashing). This event is presented by Bishop Animal Shelter, and will even have a parade of adoptable doggies if you want to expand your fam-jam.
Next time you ask your dog, “Wanna go for a walk?” tell them it’ll be a long one, and come over to Payne Park for the Doggie Walkathon! With over 38-acres to play, your dog won’t want to go home after the race! This event is hosted by the Southeastern Guide Dogs, and offers music, local vendors, the Southeastern Guide Dogs Gift shop, and more! It’s only a 3k walk, so we're sure your dog will love it! You, on the other hand, might want to start working out now to keep up with your four-legged friend!
