Bark in the Park
Shelby County Humane Society brings Bark in the Park to Veterans Park each Autumn for a day of canine entertainment! This event will showcase vendors and adoptable animals while providing a kids’ zone for the little ones and a low-cost vaccine clinic for Fido. There will be a costume and trick contest in addition to a blessing of the animals. But the real piece de resistance of Bark in the Park is the Dachshund Race. Guests are invited to gather round as local weiners race for the gold, so mark your calendars!36
Mardi Gras Parade of Pups
Beads, jazz, and glitter - oh my! Mardi Gras is coming to Hoover, brought to you by the Shelby County Humane Society. The Mardi Gras Parade for Pups is a parade that heads down Main Street to the Cajun Steamer for an afterparty! Dogs and humans are encouraged to dress up to compete for the coveted crown of King and Queen of Mardi Gras. Small floats are allowed, and participants may throw prizes out to the crowds. A small donation is required to participate, while the event itself is free to spectate.24
Barktoberfest
Any Southern city is incomplete without a fall festival, and in Hoover, they follow suit with Barktoberfest! Organized by Two by Two Rescue at the Helena Amphitheatre, this free event showcases so much to do in so little time. For the dogs, there will be adoption events, vaccine and microchip clinics, and an off-leash dog park. For the kids, bouncy castles, face painting, and pony rides. And for the whole family, there will be live music, hayrides, and photo booths galore. But wait! There is more! Walk away with Barktoberfest with a door prize or a plate of their delicious fall treats. Grab a leash, you will not want to miss this.12
Dog Days at Discovery
Hosted by Discovery United Methodist Church, Dog Days at Discovery brings together the pet community for a day of fun and games! There will be a kids zone, live music sets, pet-centric vendors, and lots and lots of food. For those guests who are spiritual, there will be a blessing of the animals in the name of St. Francis, the patron saint of animals. This free event is sure to be fun for the entire family, and an excellent way to welcome the new school year in style!Paws for the Cause 5K/1M Run/Walk
Before the holiday season kicks into high gear, Shelby County Humane Society hosts the Paws for the Cause 5K/1 Mile race for both humans and dogs! There will be several races, some shortened for children and pets, and others being cross-country, off-road treks throughout Veterans Park. When the running is done and the panting has subsided, there will be several vendors waiting at the event. Registration for the longest race comes in at $35, and both humans and dogs get a special prize for participating!
