The Tuscaloosa Metropolitan Animal Shelter (or TMAS for short) is a non-profit organization that is funded by the city. They do their best to get animals into loving homes, working with local rescues to limit the amount of euthanized creatures. Thankfully, the shelter has lowered its kill rates by over 30% in the last few years, with goals to continue decreasing those numbers. They also act as the city's animal control, being responsible for all rescued strays in the area.
TMAS runs numerous programs, including spaying/neutering, education for the community, happy hour fundraisers and volunteering opportunities. They also strive to reunite lost dogs with their owners.
No Greater Lover Animal Rescue, another organization who focuses on animals, is a small, no-kill shelter that works to get animals from high-kill shelter euthanasia into forever homes. Being that it is one of the smaller shelters in Western Alabama, No Greater Love relies heavily on the tireless work of volunteers and their foster network to help prevent unnecessary death amongst the dog population in shelters there.
