Today, the SPCA of Monterey County offers a plethora of services and programs to enrich the lives of the community's pets and people. Homeless animals are accommodated with care and shelter, pet adoptions, lost and found animal reporting, and a foster program. Every dog in the care of the SPCA receives a health and behavior evaluation, vaccinations, a microchip, deworming, flea and tick prevention, and is spayed/neutered.
Through such thorough care, the shelter strives to enhance the adoptability of each animal and give them the best possible chance at a happy, healthy life in a permanent home! The organization is also dedicated to strengthening the local community and ensuring that pets already in loving homes remain there. The services available to pet owners include animal licensing, a pet food bank, PetMeals program, humane euthanasia and cremation, the Guardian Angel Future Care program, and low-cost spay/neuter, microchipping, and vaccination services. Through their compassionate efforts and commitment to the community, the SPCA is the heart of animal rescue in Monterey County.
Animal Friends Rescue Project (AFRP) is another incredible and compassionate organization serving the animals and people of Carmel-by-the-Sea. This nonprofit is located in the neighboring city of Pacific Grove and is dedicated to finding responsible forever homes for the area's stray, abandoned, and abused companion animals. Additionally, AFRP strives to end the pet overpopulation crisis using focused spay/neuter programs. Originally founded in 1998, the animal rescue organization helps more than 1,200 dogs and 1,000 cats each year.
They have partnered with other local shelters to rescue animals that don't stand a chance in the shelter system and provide them with the specialized care they need for their eventual placement into loving homes. AFRP provides animal adoption services, shelter animal medical care, responsible pet ownership education, behavioral guidance/resources, a spay/neuter voucher program, and community outreach. It is with the help of approximately 400 active volunteers that they are able to continuously provide this compassionate care, sheltering and fostering animals in need until they are adopted into permanent, loving homes.
