Situated between Los Angeles and San Diego, Encinitas, California, is a tiny beach city on the Pacific Coast. Known mostly for being a prime surf spot, Encinitas is on its way to another claim to fame - a dog-friendly, Cali city! While it's certainly not as pup-driven as some other California cities (San Diego and San Francisco, we're looking at you), it's climbing the ranks to becoming a dog-friendly atmosphere. Much of this can be credited to the shelters and their activity in this area.
One of biggest shelters that services Encinitas is the Rancho Coastal Humane Society. This organization is a non-profit, charitable organization that's dedicated to creating safe spaces for animals in need, fostering and caring for them, and then seeking out forever homes for pups. Though their main goal is to provide adoption options for the Southern California area, they also host and sponsor many educational programs, provide vet care for pups in need, and work hard to continue spreading the word about proper pet care.
Another, smaller organization in Encinitas is the K9 Connection, a non-profit rescue that's been open since 2005 with the goal to find homes for pups in need. Either of these fine establishments should be on your list the next time you are looking to bring a new furry friend home!
It wouldn't be California without plenty of outside activities that you and your pup can explore together, and Encinitas is nothing if not a space for exploration! Some of the most popular trails in the area include the San Elijo Lagoon Trail and the Village Park Trail. The Lagoon Trail is a 3-mile hike that will take you and Fido about two hours to complete together. It's a fun hike, but watch out, it can get muddy! The other fun trail, Village Park, is a low-key nature hike where your pooch can run around off-leash!
