Huntington Beach is one of many coastal communities in California. With close proximity to Anaheim, Long Beach, and Irvine, Huntington Beach sees a lot of tourists every year. While these beachgoers come and go, homeless pets in the area don’t have the option to leave the streets unless they are brought in to one of the animal shelters in the area.
The Orange County Humane Society has dedicated itself to the care of homeless, abused, neglected, and unwanted animals in the Huntington Beach area. Not only does the shelter provide a home for the animals in its care, but it also helps rehabilitate pets in need, nurses sick pets, and feeds the hungry animals. In addition to all of this, the shelter also tries to find homes for all of the animals it houses.
Save Our Strays of Huntington is a non-profit animal care center in Huntington Beach that is much less known than the Orange County Humane Society. While many people seem to believe that there is only one animal shelter in the area, Save Our Strays of Huntington Beach also cares for the homeless animals in the community. For the last 16 years, the organization has worked hard to save the lives of hundreds of animals. As a non-profit, all funds for the shelter are raised via donations, fundraisers, and adoption fees from the shelter.
If you live in the area and are thinking about bringing a new furry friend into your household, consider visiting one of these two shelters.
Each September, Surfing dogs hit Huntington Beach for an entire weekend of fun. Join McKenna Subaru and Surf Dog Events at Huntington Beach for three full days of excitement, including a surf competition, the SurFUR Expo, a Pooch Party, and much more!
Starting at 6 p.m. on the Friday of the event, stop by Bella Terra for two hours of fun, including a fashion show, red carpet photos, music, vendors, photo opportunities, painting your dog with Pinot Pallet, and a beer and wine garden with drinks for you and your pup! This part of the event is free.
On Saturday, enjoy the surf competition and expo from 8 am to 3 pm. At 6:30 pm, join other movie lovers for the NY Dog Film Festival showing. With two separate showings, you can enjoy the rest of the evening with treats and snacks during the movie. Tickets are $25.

Each October, celebrate Halloween with the coolest cats—we mean dogs—in the Huntington Beach area at the Howloween Dog Costume Contest and Parade! Dress your dog in his or her favorite costume and head to Huntington Central Park.
Sign up for both the trick and costume contests for the opportunity to win great prizes. There will also be raffles, a children’s costume contest, vendors, and lots of great food. Proceeds from the raffle benefit Foster Care Auxiliary Orange County.
The parade takes place at noon and the award ceremony begins at 2 p.m. Best of all, the event is completely free to attend!
Each year, more than 1,200 Corgis flock to Huntington Beach for the Fall Corgi Beach Day! The event takes place on a Saturday each October to celebrate one of the most beloved dog breeds in the world.
Watch demonstrations and participate in fun contests such as the costume or pie eating contest! Not only are there tons of events to watch or participate in, but there are also plenty of vendors that will be on-site selling great products. Come take fun photos, meet with Instagram celebrities, and more! The Healthy Spot Flea Market will also be around selling products with 100% of the proceeds going to Queen’s Best Stumpy Dog Rescue.
All dog breeds are welcome at this free event.
