Santa Clarita is located just north of Los Angeles in California. Since it is so close to L.A., it often faces a lot of the same problems that the big city does. One of these problems is a large homeless animal population. As the fourth largest city in the county, L.A. has hundreds if not thousands of stray cats and dogs that are looking for new homes, many of which are in Santa Clarita. There is only one official animal shelter in the area, but they do also have a super-unique rescue in Santa Clarita that has earned attention across the country.
Citizens for Shelter Animals is an animal shelter that brings in animals due to be euthanased from other shelters in the Los Angeles area. The shelter takes in and cares for hundreds of animals, and even takes in some unusual animals like racoons, opossums, and hawks! Food, shelter, and medical care are provided for all animals at Citizens for Shelter Animals until new homes can be found.
One of the best rescues in the area is also the most unique. The Gentle Barn is an animal rescue located in Santa Clarita that is home to farm animals, cats, and dogs. Since opening in 1999, The Gentle Barn has helped numerous animals. The rescue is currently home to over 170 animals. They host visitors who can interact with all the animals housed within their walls. While this isn’t a traditional animal shelter, The Gentle Barn allows you to sponsor animals to help pay for their care. There are now Gentle Barn locations in St. Louis, Missouri, and Knoxville, Tennessee, as well.
Each October, Bow-Wows and Meows hosts a Pet Fair at William S. Hark Park in Newhall, California, on a Sunday. The Pet Fair is sponsored by local vendors, veterinarians, and other businesses. Bring your dog, meet new friends, and maybe even bring home a new furry family member! This adoption event is known for finding more than 100 animals new homes each year.
Animals from all seven shelters in LA County are brought to the event in hopes of finding them new homes. While you are there, be sure to browse through the vendor booths, check out the food trucks, and enter the raffle! There is a Famous Fun Dog Show, where your dog can participate in contests to win poocherific prizes.
Free to enter, the fair runs from 11:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.
West Creek Park hosts the Bark For Life of the Santa Clarita Valley event each October. Bring your dog to the park for a day full of games, dog-related shopping, goody bags, and much more! Much like Relay For Life, Bark For Life raises money for the American Cancer Society.
At Bark For Life, you can have photographs taken of you and your dog, get a caricature painting, or enter your dog in the costume contest!
Registration is required. Tickets cost $15 for one dog or $25 for two. For each additional dog, there will be a $10 charge.
The event runs from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m.
The Annual Hoppy Howlidays Holiday Party is held each December at Yorkshire Square Brewery. The fundraiser runs from noon to 6 p.m. and all proceeds benefit the Linda Blair WorldHeart Foundation, which educates the public about animal welfare and misunderstood dog breeds such as “bully breeds.”
Actress Linda Blair will even be at the event to meet attendees and take photographs!
Yorkshire Square Brewery will host a draw for great prizes and a Snuggle Drive to help the Linda Blair WorldHeart Foundation get the blankets, towels, and dog beds that the rescue needs for the dogs it cares for.
Spend the day with your pupper enjoying all of the paw-some activities that this event offers!
Held each may, the Fight It! 5k is a race event that supports a truly bark-tastic cause - the Brenda Mehling Cancer Fund! Tie up your sneakers and clip Fido's leash on, because the two of you can enter into a 1k, 5k or 10k walk/race! That means that no matter your skill level, you can join the many pups and people who will be participating in this amazing event.
The event takes place in May, with registration starting at 7:00 am. Be sure to sign up beforehand, as prices jump if you wait until the week before to register!
The yearly Pawsapalooza event at West Hollywood Park in West Hollywood, California, is a huge event for dogs in the Santa Clarita area! Just a short drive away, this fun festival is hosted by PAWS/LA.
At the event, you and your dog can browse through vendor booths full of dog-related products and services, enjoy live music, and munch on delicious food. Humans can enjoy great drinks as well!
Dress your dog up for a chance to win one of the costume contests at the event, including best owner/pet lookalikes. There will also be a raffle where great prizes are given away.
Held one Sunday each May, the event runs from 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. with free admission for all attendees!
