Give a Wag! Gives to Avon Shelters

Avon, Connecticut, sits about 10 miles northwest of Hartford. While it is a much smaller town than Hartford, Avon still has its fair share of problems, one of which is animal homelessness. Luckily, the animals in this area can find care at local shelters.

Our Companions Animal Shelter opened in 2002 in Ashford. The organization quickly garnered attention for being the first animal sanctuary in the state. The animals that end up at Our Companions Animal Shelter live in an environment that is more like that of a home than an animal shelter. Animals at the sanctuary are given a lot more freedoms than they would have received in a regular shelter. Animals of all ages and breeds are accepted at Our Companions Animal Shelter.

The Connecticut Humane Society was founded in 1881, making it the oldest animal welfare organization in the state. The organization’s goal is to find loving homes for each companion animal in the state. While an animal is in the humane society’s care, staff helps provide medical care and affection until the animal can be placed in a new home. Each year, the Connecticut Humane Society helps more than 6,000 animals find new homes. As a non-profit organization, the Connecticut Humane Society relies on donations and volunteers, as well as fundraising efforts. The organization currently has four locations across Connecticut.

If you live in the Avon area and are interested in adding a pet to your household, consider a visit to one of these local shelters to find a furry new friend.
