When animals in Cape Coral and anywhere along Florida’s Gulf Coast need help, there’s no shortage of paw-some animal welfare groups ready to come to the rescue!
Gulf Coast Humane Society is a perfect example. This not-for-profit animal welfare organization is based in nearby Fort Myers and has an unwavering commitment to helping companion pets find their forever homes regardless of how long it takes. Operating on a no-kill philosophy, the society runs an adoption center and a spay/neuter and veterinary clinic, plus educates the wider community about the welfare of homeless pets.
Gulf Coast Humane Society doesn’t receive any government funding or any financial support from the Humane Society of the United States or ASPCA. As a result, it relies on generous donations from the community, not to mention the tireless work of volunteers, to continue working towards a world where more animal lives can be saved.
PAWS Lee County is another local group dedicated to tackling the problem of pet homelessness. PAWS (Pets Are Worth Saving) is a non-profit spay/neuter and vaccination clinic committed to improving the lives of rescue animals in southwest Florida. Since 1998, PAWS Lee County has helped ensure that rescued animals that may otherwise have had to go without veterinary care have received the essential treatment they need.
Though not a shelter, PAWS occasionally cares for homeless animals through a network of foster homes. If you’d like to meet and maybe adopt one of the group’s rescued animals, get in touch with PAWS to set up an appointment.

On the second Tuesday of every month, dog lovers in Fort Myers, Cape Coral, and surrounding areas get together to enjoy Brews for Barks. Held at Millennial Brewing Co. in Fort Myers, this dog-friendly event allows you to enjoy a refreshing beer, socialize with other animals, and do it all with your dog by your side! Dogs are always welcome at Brews for Barks and as this is a family-friendly event, two-legged guests young and old are also invited. A portion of the beer sales from 6 pm to 8 pm benefits Gulf Coast Humane Society’s work to help homeless animals, plus there are also food vendors available on the night.
