Give a Wag! Gives to Daytona Beach Shores Shelters

The Halifax Humane Society annually provides services to over 25,000 animals in the Greater Daytona Beach area of Volusia County! The facility has the capacity to kennel and cage 350 animals a day and is usually full. This nonprofit organization was founded in 1937. They offer over 35 programs that range from animal sheltering and adoption, to various training/education programs, to legislative action, to health care.

Their programs are really exceptional, including all of the different members of the community. Beach Buddies is a program in which a citizen may take a dog on a three-day pass to get acquainted as a future furry friend or just as a chance for some pawsome dog fun in the sun. A point of pride is the Prison N Pups program in which the organization works with the Tomoka Correctional Facility. The program provides hope to both man and man's best friend as the animals are socialized to become adoptable and the inmates receive training that may lead to future employment in animal services.

With a heart for the disabled, the facilities are availed to My Angel with Paws to support therapy and service animals about three times a year. For animals with special behavioral and medical needs, they offer a Foster Care Program in which you may choose to care for an orphaned, young pet, provide TLC to an unsocialized animal, or support rehabilitation. Lost pet? The organization will help!

As a non-profit, funds are raised by donors, through partnerships and with charities and fund-raising events, such as "Yappy Hours" and "Fur Balls".

Daytona Beach is the third city in Florida to hold a Dog Film Festival. The event is sponsored by Cinematique and Brownie's Dog Boutique. Participants can watch short dog movies - but only with service and companion dogs. The proceeds go to Sophie's Choice Animal Rescue and a memorial for Daytona's Town Dog, Brownie. For 14 years, from 1940 - 1954 a little stray dog, named Brownie, was adopted by the taxi company. Daily, Brownie visited the stores on Beach Street with a can on his collar for donations to pay for his care. He was so beloved that 75 mourners attended his funeral. His memorial is located in Riverside Park, by Beach Street.
