Give a Wag! Gives to Dunedin Shelters

This gulf-side city in Florida has gained a reputation of being the most dog-friendly city in the Tampa Bay area - a feat that's hard to claim, as this section of Florida is truly all about the pooches! With an over-the-top, dog-friendly downtown, plenty of pubs, bars, and restaurants that welcome your pup, and tons of activities for you both, it's easy to see why this city has gained the reputation it has.

Just like other cities in this area, the big focus on pups has lead to the forming of a ton of dog organizations, associations, societies, and more. One of the biggest shelters in the area is the Suncoast Animal League, a non-profit, no-kill, and no-time-limit shelter. They rely mostly on volunteers to foster pups, and though they don't have a time-limit, they do have to limit the number of strays taken into the actual shelter. This is done to prevent over-crowding and the use of euthanasia.

Another doggie association is the Dunedin Dog Rescue, an organization that rescues dogs from local and rural kill shelters. They take in dogs from owners who surrender them, people looking to re-home their pets, and strays, as well.

Contact either of these fine establishments the next time you are thinking of bringing a new fur buddy into your home! They would be happy to hear from you.

    #1 Dogtoberfest

It's one of the biggest Fall events on the Gulf Coast, and you and your pooch are invited! Dogtoberfest is an annual event, going on a decade strong in the beautiful, charming downtown of Dunedin. The event, put on by the Suncoast Animal League, will feature a full day of doggie fun for you and your pet, including a pet costume contest, a coronation of the dog King and Queen of the festival, a My Pet's Got Talent, an Alumni Parade, and most unique of all, the annual running of the wieners - that's right, it's wiener dog race!

Don't miss out on this technically free event ($5 for parking) and don't forget to bring your four-legged friend to sniff around, meet new friends, and enjoy the festivities.

#2 Pinellas Trail in Downtown Dunedin

Downtown Dunedin is exceptionally dog-friendly. While you're able to bring your furry friend into most stores, restaurants, and bars, the real unique feature is the Pinellas Trail that cuts right through the downtown. This pet-friendly trail goes on for miles and miles and winds through many cities in Florida. It's about 40 miles long, with trailheads that begin in many cities. Though your pooch must be leashed, this is a hot spot for pup-exploration, and you'll likely meet dozens of other dogs along the way! Just make sure your pooch is polite, and be sure to prepare for the hot, Florida sun. Always clean up after your pup so the runners, bikers, hikers, and boarders don't get an accidental squishy surprise on the trail!

#3 Honeymoon Island State Park Dog Beach

This is the hottest, sandiest spot for you and your pooch to enjoy in all of Dunedin! Though the entire city is relatively dog-welcoming, there's not a ton of shoreline that allows your pup the freedom to roam. The Honeymoon Island State Park Dog Beach features soft, white sand, lapping salt waves, and even a nature trail that starts at the beach and carries you and your pup onward to adventure! The beach is free, open all day, year-round, and is located on the southern tip of the island.
Make sure you keep Fido on a six-foot leash and clean up after your doggo.

    #5 Pup Parks

The pup parks in Dunedin are plentiful, that's for sure! Though most of the regular parks in the area are primarily kid-friendly, the city has made sure that there are plenty of pooch-specific spaces. One of the best parks in the area is the Happy Tails Dog Park. A fenced-in park with separate sections for big and small pups, the Happy Tails park features grass, shade, pup-friendly mulch, and plenty of room for you and your pooches to roam. Another paw-pular park is the Achieva Paw Park. This park is relatively new but has proven itself to be a pawsh spot for the coolest hounds to hang. The clean, simple park is the perfect spot for you to bond with your doggo! With plenty of room to run and bound, you and your pooch will love this spot!
