The city of Melbourne sits along the Atlantic shoreline in an area that's notably nicknamed the Space Coast. Just a few miles away from the infamous Cocoa Beach and of course, it's nickname-sake, NASA and SpaceX, Melbourne has quite a few well-known features. But one lesser-known feature of Melbourne is it's incredibly dog-friendliness, largely due to the number of rescues, shelters, and pup organizations in the area.
One of the biggest organizations is the Brevard Humane Society, active in helping pups since 1952! This no-kill shelter is a space for the animals who are so often forgotten. The society's main goal is to limit the number of homeless pets in the area, help animals find these fur-babies forever homes, and offer as many veterinary and educational services and programs as possible.
A more unique rescue in the area is the Smiling Dog Rescue in Melbourne. Focusing specifically on shelter dogs that are at risk for euthanasia, Smiling Dog hosts a (small) number of pooches in foster homes, searching for responsible owners who will love and care for these second-chance pups. Though a small organization, they offer fostering and adoption services, and try to nurse underdogs back to the health so they can help them find forever homes.
Don't miss out on the chance to jog through Wickham Park with your pup, raise funds for a worthy cause, and get a good bonding session with your doggo in during the whole experience.
Don't forget to keep your pup leashed!
