With its prime location close to downtown Miami and Fort Lauderdale, Miramar is just a tail wag away from a plethora of paw-some dog-friendly attractions and experiences! Not only that, but it’s also within reach of several inspirational dog rescue groups and animal welfare organizations that do whatever it takes to give unwanted and abused companion animals a second chance at life.
The Humane Society of Broward County is a shining example of how animal advocates can make a real difference in the lives of dogs in need. The society provides shelter, aid, and responsible adoptions to the dogs and cats in its care, and in 2017 alone placed almost 7,000 furry friends in loving forever homes.
It runs a 33,000 square-foot, completely air-conditioned shelter that can house more than 300 dogs and cats, and the open-admission shelter is visited by more than 100,000 people each year! As the Humane Society of Broward County is not affiliated with any county or national organization, it relies on the generosity of the community to continue saving the lives of dogs and other companion animals.
Rescue Paws 4 Furry Hearts also does plenty of grrr-eat work in the Miramar area. This non-profit organization is dedicated to raising funds to help rescued, stray, and surrendered animals receive essential veterinary care and find loving forever homes.
As a foster-based animal rescue, Rescue Paws 4 Furry Hearts does not have its own shelter and can only accept an animal if it has a foster home available. Additional foster carers are always welcome and are essential to the future work of this wonderful rescue group.
Feel like taking your dog for a relaxing stroll and helping animals in need at the same time? You should sign up for the Humane Society of Broward County’s annual Walk for the Animals, held each March through Downtown Fort Lauderdale and along the scenic New River. The centrepiece of the event is the 1.25-mile walk, with thousands of dog owners and their four-legged friends tackling the easy course. However, there are heaps more to see and do throughout the morning, including live music, a pancake breakfast, doggy demonstrations, games, giveaways, and vendor booths. There’s no registration fee for the walk, but as this is the Humane Society of Broward County’s largest fundraising event of the year, all participants are encouraged to register and raise as much money as possible!

Christmas is the time of year when we all like to spend some quality time with everyone we love. If you’re a dog owner, that of course means taking the time to spoil the family pooch as much as possible! And there’s no better way to treat your canine companion than to take him along to the Paws With Claus Holiday Paw-ty, hosted by Tamarac Parks and Recreation each December. The highlight is a contest to determine the best-dressed holiday hound, so you’ll want to make sure your furry friend is looking as fetching as possible, but there’s a whole lot more to enjoy throughout the event! You can have your dog’s photo taken with Santa, sample some doggie treats, and win some grrr-eat raffle prizes, so get into the holiday spirit and enjoy yourself with plenty of other like-minded animal lovers.
