Palm Bay has plenty to offer dog lovers looking for some pet-friendly fun, and the city is also home to several excellent animal welfare organizations and dog rescue groups. The two biggest animal advocates in the area are Brevard Humane Society and the SPCA of Brevard.
Brevard Humane Society is a no-kill animal shelter and sanctuary that has been helping local pets since 1952! Over the years it has rescued thousands of at-risk companion animals and helped them find loving, responsible homes.
SPCA of Brevard, meanwhile, aims to protect and provide a voice for homeless animals. It shelters and finds homes for unwanted animals, and works to educate the community about the importance of spaying and neutering pets. Both organizations do some excellent work in and around Palm Bay, and both always welcome volunteers and donations.
However, there are also several smaller groups specializing in canine rescue services in the Palm Bay area. One of those is Sparticus Legacy, a Palm Bay-based, no-kill rescue group. Run entirely by volunteers, this non-profit runs a network of foster homes for orphaned and abandoned dogs. Those dogs are given the medical care, rehabilitation, and love they all need while being fostered, before being adopted out to loving forever homes.
Wonder Dog Rescue is another central Florida non-profit with a commitment to helping animals in need. It provides a safe sanctuary for dogs as well as domestic, agricultural, and exotic animals. Most of its adoptable dogs reside in foster care with the group’s volunteers, and this prepares these pooches for life in a home environment when they find their forever family.
A fun, relaxing night out to raise money for a grrr-eat animal cause? Just tell us where we need to be and when! Halloween Yappy Hour is hosted by Sparticus Legacy Dog Rescue and held at El Chico Café in Melbourne on the outdoor patio. This dog-friendly event promises cheap drinks, delicious food, good times, and a chance to socialize with plenty of other like-minded animal lovers. There’s a cash prize for the best-dressed dog that attends, as well as plenty of adoptable animals to meet and greet. A raffle is held to raise funds for Sparticus Legacy’s rescue efforts, and a donation of food or treats gets you a free cup of queso.
Love getting active with your pooch? The Move Your Mutt 2-Miler might just be your idea of the paw-fect day out! Held at Satellite Beach Dog Park, this athletic event lets you join scores of other dog lovers to run, walk, or wag your way around a scenic 2-mile course. The course begins and ends at Satellite Beach Dog Park, and there are awards for the top age-group runners and the top dogs in size categories. Water bowls and treats are available at the finish line as a reward for your furry friend, but the best part is that Move Your Mutt supports Brevard Aiding Shelter Animals Project, a Florida non-profit which promotes loving homes for pets.
On the third Thursday of every month, The Irish Pub and Eatery in Titusville hosts its regular Pints & Pups at the Pub. This dog-friendly evening is the paw-fect chance for dog owners and their pooches to relax on the outdoor patio, enjoy discount drinks and delicious food, and socialize with other animal lovers. In fact, the whole evening is centered around our canine companions. There’s pet trivia, heaps of adoptable dogs, and some grrr-eat prizes. Better yet, 10% of the proceeds benefit SPCA of Brevard, so if you’re looking for an excuse to enjoy a night out with your pet, this event is ideal!
Love dogs and love beer? This is the event for you! Paws & Pints at the Port takes place each October at Port Canaveral’s Exploration Tower. With your furry friend in tow, you can enjoy delicious beer, live music, heaps of vendors, pet adoptions, and much more. There’s a paw-somely cute pet costume contest where entrants can compete to win the best costume prize or maybe even the best pet/companion look-alike award! It’s a fun, relaxed gathering of people and pets. Best of all, proceeds from the event benefit the Brevard Humane Society, so why not get along and join in all the fun?
Each February, in conjunction with Cocoa Village Mardi Gras, Brevard Humane Society hosts Mardi Gras Paws in the Park. This fun family event features a whole day full of dog-friendly entertainment in Riverfront Park. Some of the highlights include an adorable pet parade, adoptable pets, live music, plenty of food, and a silent auction! There are plenty of grrr-eat pet contests that dogs will love as much as human spectators, plus a bounce house to keep younger kids happy all day long. Friendly, leashed, and vaccinated pets are welcome, but make sure you get there early so you don’t miss out on any of the fun!
