The sleepy, quaint city of Winter Haven is located smack dab in the middle of the state of Florida, and though it doesn't reach or stretch to any of Florida's coastline, it has almost 50 lakes within its borders! Made up of a relatively older population, the city isn't the bustling metropolitan area of its neighboring city, Orlando, but luckily, it still has plenty to do for pooches, and of course, their pawrents, too!
Some of the shelters and pet organizations in the area are responsible for many of the pup-activities that you and your pooch can participate in.
The Humane Society of Polk County is a non-profit organization that was founded in 1972. About eight years later, the first shelter was built. On average, the shelter holds around thirty dogs and 75 cats inside its walls, but each year the number of animals they rescue fluctuates. Though not a massive shelter, they make big a difference in their county by rescuing homeless and abandoned animals, providing educational programs, offering veterinarian services to pups in need, and advocating for spaying and neutering.
Another rescue organization that serves Winter Haven is the Pet Lovers Polk County Rescue, a non-profit establishment that's dedicated to rescuing and finding homes for Polk County pups and cats in need.
Be sure to check either of these shelters out the next time you are looking for a furry friend!
