The Johnson County Humane Society is Iowa City’s largest animal shelter. This completely volunteer-sustained shelter is committed to supporting and promoting the humane treatment of all animals in the county and encourages the support and sponsorship of community education programs promoting more compassion, understanding, and appreciation of animals. They are devoted to advancing community understanding of animal protection and advocacy. The Johnson County Humane Society fosters animals, teaches responsible caregiving through their adoption program, and actively lobbies for better animal protection laws.
Another great shelter in the area is the Iowa City Animal Care and Adoption Center. This center is an animal shelter for Iowa City. Aside from sheltering and adoption services, the shelter provides a slew of services for the community including animal behavior and training information, community outreach, humane education, and low-cost spay, neuter, and vaccination referral services. They are a volunteer-run facility committed to helping the underserved animal community in Iowa City and promoting a healthy understanding of animal protection and advocacy.
Let your dog enjoy the summer sun one last time at the annual dog paddle! Every year, right before the Iowa City Park Pool is drained for the season, the city partners with the Friends of the Animal Center Foundation for their annual dog swim. The Olympic-sized pool is open to all pups interested in doggie paddling the afternoon away. For our smaller furry friends, the kiddie pool is reserved. This is the one chance your pup has to take a dip in the pool, so don’t miss it! General admission is $15 but look out for early registration to save $5!

Walk your pup around downtown Iowa City as it transforms into a block party of music, food, and fun. With four stages scheduled tight with local, national, and international acts, the Iowa City Jazz Fest encourages and educates a jazz audience of all ages. Bring a blanket or chair and take in the sweet summer sounds.
The Iowa Soul Festival is the only one of its kind in the state. It celebrates the art, food, music, and dance of the African and African-American communities and brings in people from all over the region. This yearly summer festival features local, regional and nationally recognized artists to help show the positive influence the African/African American culture has on the city and its surrounding area. Bring your pup out to celebrate this culture through live entertainment, soul food, art, crafts, and much more!
Attend the fourth-annual dog-jog and get some best-friend exercising time with your pup! You can choose to do the 2-mile best friend walk or, for those with a more athletic fur-end, you can run the dog jog 5k. The event is organized by local dog daycare and boarder, Lucky Pawz, and all proceeds from the Dog Jog go to supporting the Iowa City Animal Shelter. So grab you and your dog’s matching sweatbands and get ready to run for this impawsibly good cause!
