Located just 10 miles west of downtown Chicago, the city of Berwyn boasts a thriving and tight-knit community of dog owners. It also falls well within the reach of several paw-some animal rescue groups and welfare organizations, each of which works tirelessly to support and protect companion animals in need.
Animal Care League is just one of the groups that serve the animals of Chicago and surrounding areas. This limited-admission shelter is located in nearby Oak Park and has been helping homeless dogs, cats, and other small animals since 1973. Animal Care League provides food, shelter, medical attention, and love to the animals in its care until they can be matched with the right owner.
As a non-profit organization, however, it depends on generous community support to be able to continue finding loving homes for as many animals as possible each and every year.
Hinsdale Humane Society boasts a similar commitment to the welfare needs of Chicago’s homeless animals. Since 1953, the society has been working to promote animal welfare and the proper care of pets.
This private non-profit cares for homeless animals, giving them the treatment and rehabilitation they need to find happiness in a loving forever home. It also offers education services and programs to encourage the compassionate treatment of animals, acting as a voice for those companion animals who depend on us for care.
Just as at Animal Care League, donations and volunteers are always needed at Hinsdale Humane Society. If you’re looking to lend a hand to an animal welfare group, both of these organizations are well worth your consideration.

The Anti-Cruelty Society has been working towards its goal to create a community of caring by helping pets and educating people since 1899! Every year, it holds Bark in the Park, its largest annual fundraiser, to ensure that it can continue to care for animals in need. Now held at the home of the Chicago Bears, Soldier Field, the event features a 5K walk that allows dogs and their people to enjoy beautiful city views as they stroll along Chicago’s iconic lakefront path. After the walk, you and your pooch can socialize with all the other animal lovers and their pets on the Stadium Green, where you can enjoy agility courses, pet product samples, dog massages and paw-dicures, arts and crafts, relay races, and heaps of family-friendly fun. Whether you have two legs or four, there’s enough to keep your tail wagging all day long!
