For homeless animals, life can be extremely difficult. Pets who have been abandoned often don’t have the skills to fend for themselves on the streets. Fortunately for the homeless animals of Crystal Lake, Illinois, there are rescues and shelters that are here to help.
The Assisi Animal Foundation is the first no-kill, non-profit shelter in McHenry County, Illinois. This organization is dedicated to providing shelter and care for animals in need. While these animals are being cared for, the staff is also working to find them new homes. As a no-kill shelter, Assisi Animal Foundation doesn’t euthanize animals to create more space in the shelter. Instead, the organization works with animals to make them adoptable and keeps caring for them until they can find a permanent home. Assisi Animal Foundation also runs a trap and release program where they bring in feral animals for spaying or neutering services to prevent more unwanted animals from wandering the streets. These animals are then released, as they are wild and not be fit to be pets.
Helping Paws Animal Shelter is another animal welfare organization in the area that funs a no-kill facility. Since 2016, Helping Paws Animal Shelter has been able to care for 125 cats and 45 dogs at any given time. As a non-profit organization, Helping Paws Animal Shelter relies on volunteers to care for the animals at the shelter. Since the organization sees more than 800 animals each year, volunteers and donations are extremely important in keeping the shelter open. Helping Paws Animal Shelter seeks to give every homeless animal in the area a second chance at finding a permanent family.
