As a small suburb of Kansas City, Overland Park doesn’t have any of its own animal shelters to help creatures in need. Instead, residents of the area have a few shelters within a 40-minute drive that care for hundreds of animals each year! These shelters are dedicated to providing medical care, food, and shelter to a variety of different animals. Two of the most well-known shelters are Kansas City Pet Project and the Heart of America Humane Society.
KC Pet Project is a non-profit organization that runs the Kansas City, Missouri Animal Shelter. The group cares for almost 10,000 animals every year and works with Animal Control and other animal welfare organizations to help get more homeless pets adopted. This group is working hard to create a No-Kill Kansas City, where all animals are given a chance to live their full, best lives. While based in Kansas City, KC Pet Project has an adoption center in Overland Park, where available cats and dogs are housed in the hopes that they will get adopted.
The Heart of America Humane Society in Lee’s Summit, Missouri, is dedicated to providing help to animals in need. The organization is working with local shelters to spay and neuter stray pets to decrease the number of homeless animals in the area, while still fighting to increase the number of pets adopted to permanent homes.
If you live in Overland Park, consider making the short trip to one of these great animal shelters, so you can provide a loving home to an animal in need.
