Give a Wag! Gives to Wichita Shelters

Animals are in need of homes all over the country, and Wichita, Kansas, is no exception! If you are looking to add a furry friend to your household, there are a few different animal shelters in the Wichita area, but a couple of them stand out as local favorites: the Wichita Animal Action League and Kansas K-9 ResQ.

The Wichita Animal Action League, or WAAL to the locals, is a non-profit rescue organization dedicated to helping all neglected, abused, and abandoned animals in Wichita. The organization opened in November 2013 and helps animals find foster homes or forever families. In addition to finding homes for homeless animals, WAAL traps and neuters feral cats before returning them to the wild. WAAL responds to abuse claims and educates pet owners on pet ownership. If you would like to help WAAL, the organization is always accepting donations.

Kansas K-9 ResQ was founded in 2001 by a woman who fostered a dog in the Wichita area. This organization takes in unclaimed stray animals from the Wichita Animal Shelter and puts them in foster homes after they are examined by a veterinarian. While in foster homes, the dogs are crate and house trained while permanent homes are found for them. Kansas K-9 ResQ also now has the capacity to help disabled animals.

For anyone in the Wichita, Kansas, area that is in search of a new family member, both the Wichita Animal Action League and Kansas K-9 ResQ are great options for helping homeless pets find forever homes.

    Duration 10 a.m. to 12 p.m.

    #1 Read to Rover

The Kansas Humane Society has partnered with the Wichita Public Library to give children the opportunity to tell stories to registered therapy dogs as they learn to read. The dogs offer children a non-judgmental listener as they read books aloud. During November, you can bring your child to the Wichita Public Library for special "Read to Rover" days. They not only get the chance to read to a dog, but they also get to make cool craft projects.

Read to Rover events are held on the 3rd Saturday of every month.

The library asks for a $3 donation for each child who participates in the reading event. All proceeds from the event are given to the Kansas Humane Society.
