The nonprofit organization serves more than 4,000 displaced and homeless animals each year through their adoption services, foster program, spay/neuter clinic, and dog training. Additionally, their efforts continuously contribute to strengthening the community through advocating awareness and support for the humane treatment of animals, offering educational programs and resources, and working to end animal overpopulation by promoting spaying and neutering. The shelter even offers pet food assistance and low-cost spay/neuters for those in need. The dedication and compassion of the Animal Refuge League of Greater Portland and their 400+ weekly volunteers facilitate the organization's ability to embrace all animals and give them an opportunity for a new beginning!
Another loving, committed rescue in the Portland area is the Maine Sheltie Rescue, focusing all of their efforts on the care and protection of Shetland Sheepdogs (Shelties) in need. Established in 2012, the nonprofit was founded to fulfill the need of lost, abandoned, and mistreated Shelties to find caring homes. The individuals comprising the organization have many years of experience with Shelties and their knowledge and love of the breed allow them to provide exemplary care. The Maine Sheltie Rescue operates entirely on the dedication of volunteers opening their hearts and homes to the beloved dog breed to ensure the humane treatment of Shelties, prevent their overpopulation, and place them in loving, responsible homes.
