As far as shelters and organizations go, Canton is home to the Homeward Bound Rescue League. This organization was founded in 2006 and has built up a reputation in the community for being a safe haven for rescued dogs and cats. Since their initiation, they have placed over 3,000 dogs and cats into fur-ever homes. Being a no-kill, non-profit organization, they have worked for and with the community to help rescue, foster, and adopt out many animals.
Homeward Bound Rescue League is run on a volunteer basis, with many volunteers acting as foster parents for these furry friends. Donations are accepted through their website, and the site also acts as a resource to help anyone looking to volunteer their time. Even though this organization does not currently have a physical facility, they partner up with Pet Supplies Plus, located at 43665 Ford Rd, Canton, MI 48187. On the first Saturday of each month, the rescue takes all of their adoptable dogs to this store for the public to meet the pups! This event always runs from noon-3:30.
If ever you find yourself interested in adopting one of their many fur-friends, you will go through a screening process that involves fostering the animal for a specific amount of time before approval will be granted! How fetch!
According to the locals, the best spots aren't on the trails, but off of the beaten path. Shallow streams are found throughout the area where pups can cool down in during the warmer months, and there are a few benches on the path to sit down and relax on!
