When it was first established, this shelter was actually called the Dearborn Animal Shelter and was run as a pound where animals were sold for only five dollars each, without any screening process. Once "the friends" took over in 1993, they were able to pave the way to creating a positive and safe environment for each animal that comes through their doors. While it has not always been the smoothest road to travel, this shelter has proven itself to be one of the most wonderful places around for puppers and kittens alike.
This shelter is commended for how involved they get in the surrounding communities by participating in different outreach programs, which include adoption events, spay/neuter events, and events run by the city. Additionally, they also have a website that details just how to adopt an animal through their shelter and goes over how to become a volunteer. This organization prides itself on the fact that it has not needed to euthanize any animal due to cage space since the year 2000, and they plan to keep it that way for years to come! The shelter is located at 2661 Greenfield Road and is open various hours throughout the week.
Before heading out for a big day with your pup, make sure that everyone is well fed, including yourself of course! Biggby Coffee, located at 22445 Michigan Avenue is a great stop for you and your pupper. Not only do they provide you, the human, with coffee and bagels, they also have a special pup cup for your furry friend to enjoy. During the warmer months, this establishment has two tables outside for you and your pooch to relax at. Just remember, they cannot go inside, so be sure to leash them up while you get the treats!
