Kansas City may be known for it's love of barbeque, but for dog owners in the 37th largest city in the United States, dogs are at the heart of the city! While there are several different animal shelters in Kansas City, Kansas Citians have two favorites: KC Pet Project and Wayside Waifs. Both of these animal shelters are known in the area for their superior treatment of the city’s animals.
KC Pet Project is a non-profit animal shelter that cares for over 10,000 animals a year. KC Pet Project, also referred to as KCPP, works directly with Kansas City Animal Control to help get more animals returned to their owners or put into forever homes. KCPP is working to create a No-Kill Kansas City by promoting effective animal control policies. KCPP hopes to eliminate the killing of healthy animals in the Kansas City area.
Wayside Waifs is an animal shelter that places homeless pets into responsible homes. Boasting the largest animal shelter facility in the city, Wayside Waifs gets more than 5,400 animals into new homes each year. Wayside Waifs is known in the Kansas City area for their techniques to educate the public on responsible pet ownership. As part of the no-kill community, Wayside Waifs only puts down animals that are seriously ill or dangerous to people or other animals. Healthy animals are housed, put in foster homes, or adopted out of the shelter, and no time limit is put on their adoption date. The shelter also runs a dog park that requires a membership to help pay for running costs.
If you are ready to celebrate fall and Thanksgiving, leash up your pooch and head on down to the UCM Multipurpose Building in Warrensburg in November each year! Take your dog on a gorgeous trek through the University of Central Missouri's campus and then through downtown Warrensburg. The 5k requires a registration fee of $25, which goes to the Warrensburg Animal Shelter.
For anyone who would like to attend the event, but doesn't want to participate in the 5k walk/run, there will be side events for you to partake in. While there is no set fee for these side events, the admission is a donation of your choosing to the local shelter.
Wayside Waifs hosts a holiday market for you and your dog at Chicken N Pickle in North Kansas City, Missouri, each November! Bring your pup and shop for products from several local businesses at the first Doggie Holiday Bazaar in Kansas City.
This Bazaar helps raise money for local no-kill shelters through this holiday season. Due to the numerous natural disasters that struck the United States this year, there has been a large influx of pets that were lost or left homeless, and many Kansas City shelters have taken these animals in.
Vendors at the event will be selling dog toys, treats, services, apparel, and more! Wayside Waifs will be accepting donations of goods and money at the event, as well as bringing in animals to try to find them forever homes.
There will be activities for kids, as well as giveaways and raffles. You won’t want to miss out on this great event!
Does it get any better than beer and dogs? The BarkHappy KC Fall Pup Crawl that happens each November brings your love of both dogs and beer together Bring your pooch through dog-friendly shops while sipping on beer from the Smoke Brewing Company, Grains and Taps, and Llywelyn’s Pub.
