Running almost entirely from their foster family network, 4 Luv of Dog Rescue partners with dozens of rescues and shelters through North Dakota to find forever homes for pups in need. Offering resources on how to deal with the loss of a pet, pet-friendly housing, and city ordinances on pet ownership, this rescue does all it can to provide the Fargo community with everything it needs to prevent homeless animals. When they are not boosting their foster network, this shelter works closely with the Spay Neuter Impact Project (SNIP).
Diamond in the Ruff Rescue operates entirely on the time and generosity of volunteers in order to rescue and rehabilitate the homeless animals of Fargo. It is their goal to prevent homelessness through desexing, education, and advocacy against breed discrimination. This rescue’s doors are open to animals of all breeds, species, and sizes - including exotics. Founded by one woman with a dream and affinity for pitties, Diamond in the Ruff has been rescuing animals for almost a decade.
The largest shelter in the Fargo area, Homeward Animal Shelter has been in operation for over fifty years! Having rescued over 25,000 animals thus far, this shelter works closely with nearly one hundred community partners to ensure homeless and abandoned animals always have somewhere to go. Homeward hosts a low-cost microchip clinic and is a proud partner with the Safe Paws Program, which offers refuge to pets coming from domestic violence situations. Additionally, this shelter offers discounts on adoption fees for prospective adopters that are either seniors or in the military.
Going on its near 30 year anniversary, Homeward Animal Shelter’s Paws Walk raises funds to provide animals with veterinary care, food, and shelter supplies all year round! Each July, hundreds come to Rheault Farm to walk with their best pals - both biped and quadruped - for a half-mile fun run around the farm. Afterwards, participants are invited to the pet party, featuring vendors, children’s games, live music, and catering. At $25 minimum to participate, racers are encouraged to join a team and raise money to earn prizes. Not to mention, sponsors of the event have agreed to match all donations that exceed $75!
All a part of Fargo’s huge FM Pride weekend, Pride in the Park kicks off on Island Park in celebration of the LGBTQIA community. People come from far and wide to celebrate Pride in Fargo this weekend, and this event gives space for all to love and be loved. A pet pride contest will take place in between live entertainment for pups to strut their stuff and sissy that walk. When pet parents aren’t gearing up for the contest and Pride parade the following day, they can shop the local vendors, network with local LGBTQ organizations, and grab an Insta-worthy rainbow bite to eat!
In the midst of the hottest month of the year, South Park Pool puts on the Doggy Dip series in the middle of August to benefit the upkeep of Morehead Dog Park! Dogs all of all sizes are welcome, so long as they are vaccinated and able to doggy paddle. At only $2.50 for admission, grab a lawn chair and a cooler while your four-legged friend runs wild in the wading pool. This special event only happens once a year before the pool closes down for the frigid winter months, so don’t miss it!
Running from the beginning of July through the end of October, the Red River Market sweeps the streets of Downtown Fargo each Saturday. The Red River Market provides the community with hundreds of low-cost options for breakfast, lunch, and dinner! The vendors come from far and wide to sell produce, meats, cheeses, flowers, and just about everything else under the sun! Whether you are shopping for a gift from one of the DIY homeware stands or just stopping to get a quick bite with Fido, Red River Market has everything you could ask for while you walk the beautiful downtown promenade.
Beat the summer heat in the street at the annual Downtown Fargo Street Fair, situated right on Broadway! This is one of North Dakota’s biggest free events of the year and it lasts all weekend long. Leashed dogs are welcome to come along and enjoy live music, food trucks, local breweries, and so much more. There are several areas for the kids to play in while the adults visit the handicraft marketplace. This street festival seeks to bring art and the community together, featuring local artists, nonprofits, and craftsman to make Fargo just a little more creative than it was the year before!
