While it’s often overshadowed by the bright lights of nearby Las Vegas, Henderson is a bustling city full of great experiences for dogs and their owners. It’s also home to a pack of wonderful animal rescue and animal welfare groups, including the Nevada SPCA.
This non-profit operates a no-kill animal sanctuary, providing shelter and essential care to unwanted and abused animals. On any given day, Nevada SPCA’s headquarters is home to more than 1,000 rescued animals, including everything from dogs and cats to birds, turtles, and pot belly pigs. Adoptions are available six days a week to help these rescued animals find permanent, loving homes.
Nevada SPCA also promotes humane education, revers owners for low-cost spay/neuter and vaccination services, and works tirelessly to encourage everyone in the wider community to become a responsible pet owner.
The Animal Foundation is another local non-profit committed to helping animals in need. Founded in 1978, it operates the highest volume single-site animal shelter anywhere in America. The Animal Foundation saves thousands of lost, homeless, and mistreated animals each year, and its open-admission shelter is open to any pet in need.
With a mission to save the lives of all healthy and treatable animals in the Las Vegas valley, the foundation is always looking for donations, volunteers, foster carers, and anyone able to give an unwanted dog a loving forever home.

Fun in the sun with your dog — that’s what Henderson’s annual Bark in the Park is all about! Hosted by the City of Henderson, this annual, dog-friendly festival features a day full of pet-friendly goodness. Held at Cornerstone Park, Bark in the Park features vendors and informational booths, entertaining canine contests, and plenty of lovable dogs searching for their fur-ever homes. Admission is free, and pets must be leashed and accompanied by a handler aged 10 years or older. There’s even a Rover Run 5K event held before the festival kicks off, giving you and Rover the paw-fect excuse to get a little exercise before a day of fun and relaxation!
The Animal Foundation has made a huge difference in the lives of thousands of pets in the Las Vegas valley area, so why not make a difference to the Animal Foundation by raising some much-needed funds. Fast & Furriest, held each November in Sunset Park, is a family-friendly 5K run or 1-mile walk to support the foundation. You and your pooch can enjoy some fresh air and exercise together, meeting plenty of other dogs and humans, while supporting this excellent cause. Other event highlights include a vendor area, beer park, food trucks, costume contests, and adoptable pets. And even if you can’t make it along on the day, you can still run a virtual race in any location you choose to show your support.
Let your pooch cool off this September at Henderson’s annual Doggie Paddle & Play Day. Originally just a one-day affair, this awesome aquatic event is so popular it now takes up two days at the Black Mountain Aquatic Complex. Dogs of all shapes and sizes are invited to come along and take a dip, with swimming sessions organized so that dogs of similar sizes get to play together. The pool also has a graduated entry, meaning pets can walk into and out of the water as they please. It truly is a wonderful event for any dog lover to see, but watch out — stand too close and you might get wet!
