Give a Wag! Gives to Brooklyn Shelters

Brooklyn is one of five boroughs in New York City and has twenty-two neighborhoods. There are a number of shelters in the area for animals to find care and ap-paw-tunities for adoptions.

The BARC Shelter is a non-profit, no-kill, privately operated facility located in the Williamsburg neighborhood of Brooklyn. Founded in 1987, they rely on volunteers, donations and funds from their pet supply business to care for the animals. BARC’s mission is "to provide a safe haven for abandoned animals and to find permanent, loving homes for them".

With a visit to their website, you will find a thorough listing of local resources that include pet-friendly apartments, shelters, animal welfare organizations, benefits for homeless animals, pet services, and City of New York information. The BARC Shelter offers animal adoptions as well as a program in which you may sponsor an animal, covering costs of the animal's care. The shelter works with owners to locate lost pets. They serve the community by providing prescription diet food to animals in need. Volunteers are required to complete a day of orientation training.

The BARC Shelter partners with local schools and community organizations to provide outreach experiences. Local restaurants and bars sponsor karaoke and trivia nights as fundraisers for the care of the animals.

    #1 Blessing of the Animals

St. Francis of Assisi is known as the patron saint of animals. Each year during the annual celebration of the feast of St. Francis of Assisi, New Yorkers bring their animals to their local cathedral or a public site for the Blessing of the Animals. There are at least a dozen locations across the borough of Brooklyn that are opening their doors and hearts to bless the animals! These special services are typically held in the early afternoon, welcoming all animals, children, and all who wish to attend this special blessing of the creatures who give us so much daily devotion. Check with local places of worship and community papers for locations and times!

#3 Fun for Pooches at the Prospect Park Dog Field

Known as Brooklyn's backyard, the beautiful Prospect Park has daily hours in which dogs are welcome to come and play! The "bark" areas that are open to dogs include the Long Meadow, the Neadermead and Penninsula. These sprawling fields are a popular place for doggy socialization. Frisbee time? Fetch? How about a swim?  The Dog Beach is a place for water play, too. The group FIDO (Fellowship of the Interest of Dogs and their Owners) is committed to keeping Prospect Park a safe and healthy environment for pets, their owners, and the community!

#4 Saturdays at the Grand Army Plaza Greenmarket

The Grand Army Plaza Greenmarket is the flagship farmer's market for New Yorkers. Located near Prospect Park, both owner and dog can start the day with fun in the fields then proceed to explore the sights, smells, and savorings of this fresh market! While at the market, all pooches must be on a leash and be controlled by their owner, in full compliance with the city's rules for dogs in public areas. Every Saturday, all year long, the market is a place to "sniff" out some local goods. Bone appetit!

#5 Bow-Wow at the Brooklyn Bridge Dog Park and Run

The Brooklyn Bridge is famous for the spectacular views of the city, water, and pier. New Yorkers can enjoy the sights of the area while exercising their dogs at the Brooklyn Bridge Dog Park and run! This fenced area is a perfect place for your pooch to go off-leash to play. The run is groomed and easy on the paws. There are shaded hang-outs for hounds and their handlers to rest on. Make sure to follow the park rules, one of which is a caution to not let your dog dig holes, as that may become a trip hazard for others. Enjoy the day, the view and the joy of romping with your Rover in this scenic location!
