The bustling streets of Manhattan are filled with both homeless people and homeless pets. To help combat animal homelessness in Manhattan, New York, a few dedicated animal shelters provide a temporary home, food, and healthcare to hundreds of animals every year.
Bideawee is one of America’s first no-kill animal shelters. When the shelter opened in 1903, the mission of the founder was to prevent animals from being unnecessarily euthanized while at shelters. By 1906, the rescue was officially incorporated as a non-profit organization. Bideawee cares for thousands of animals every year and relies on fundraising, donations, and adoption fees to continue to care for homeless animals. With a matchmaking service, Bideawee helps potential pet owners find the perfect pet for their lifestyle. The shelter also runs a dog park for members.
Animal Care Centers of NYC takes in more than 35,000 animals each year. Since the organization never turns away an animal in need, the shelter has cared for cats, dogs, reptiles, rabbits, birds, small mammals, farm animals, and wild animals. It is the only non-profit organization to care for such a wide array of animals in the NYC area. The organization’s mission is to end animal homelessness in NYC, which is a huge task. The shelter currently has more than 200 animals in its care.
