Pittsburgh may be known far and wide as “the Steel City”, but there are plenty of reasons why it could also be known as a great place for dog lovers — to visit or to live! From its beautiful dog parks to its plethora of dog-friendly attractions, Pittsburgh has plenty to offer to any dog owner.
And with such a tight-knit community of animal enthusiasts calling this city home, Pittsburgh’s animals are in safe hands if they ever fall on hard times. Humane Animal Rescue is just one of the many animal welfare organizations committed to helping Pittsburgh’s pets. Formed in 2017 by the merger of the Animal Rescue League Shelter & Wildlife Center and Western Pennsylvania Humane Society, this new group operates an open-door policy to ensure that no dog is ever refused shelter.
Animal Friends is another of Pittsburgh’s dedicated rescue groups, and it’s been helping protect the region’s pets for more than 70 years. This non-profit organization runs an impressive 30,000 square-foot companion animal resource center that not only houses homeless pets but also offers a spay/neuter clinic, a classroom, a resource library, and more than one mile of walking trails. In addition to matching unwanted pets with loving families, it also runs a number of innovative programs designed to reduce the homeless pet problem.
There are plenty of other paw-some animal rescue groups in Pittsburgh worthy of your support. All of them work like dogs to protect and save the lives of at-risk animals, meaning Pittsburgh’s pooches will always have a chance at finding a happy, loving home.
Dog-friendly fun and education combine in this popular annual event, which is held at Humane Animal Rescue’s East End Location each fall. The festival is a launching pad for all of the innovative and exciting educational programs Humane Animal Rescue runs throughout the year, so it’s a perfect opportunity to learn what you can do to help animals in need. But there’s a whole lot more for you and your dog to see and do, including games, raffles, food, and a bounce house. Wish list donations to support Humane Animal Rescue are always welcome.
Instead of leaving your dog at home on Halloween, why not let him come out with you and sink his teeth into the ghoulishly-good fun. Held at the Animal Friends Outreach Center, this howl-o-ween party features a host of events to make dogs drool, including a trick or treat trail, dog-friendly games, and the chance to dress up in a furr-ocious costume. Sounds grrr-eat, right? Your pooch will certainly think so, and he’ll be sure to have a Halloween to remember.

Lawrence Convention Center, it features diving dogs, a grooming competition, dachshund racing, pet photos with Santa, and much more!
