With its close proximity to downtown Austin, Anderson Mill boasts access to some of the grrr-eatest dog-friendly attractions anywhere in the United States! As Austin is also home to a thriving community of animal lovers, there are plenty of animal welfare advocates and rescue groups that call the area home.
Austin Pets Alive! is just one of the groups committed to helping improve the lives of companion animals in the local area. Founded in 2008, Austin Pets Alive! has a mission to promote and provide the resources, education, and programs needed to eliminate the killing of companion animals.
Not only does the group run a range of programs designed to save the animals most at risk of not making it out of Austin’s municipal shelter alive, but it also rescues animals on euthanasia lists to give them the chance of a better life. This targeted approach has seen Austin Pets Alive! save more than 40,000 dogs and cats since 2008.
Blue Dog Rescue is another paw-some local animal rescue group. This non-profit operation is run entirely by volunteers and works to find permanent, loving homes for at-risk homeless dogs throughout Central Texas. Most of the dogs saved by Blue Dog Rescue come from Central Texas shelters where their size, color, breed, or medical problems make them unlikely to find an adoptive owner.
As Blue Dog Rescue doesn’t have a shelter facility, it cares for rescued dogs in a network of foster homes with dedicated dog lovers. Donations, volunteers, and short- and long-term foster carers are always wanted, so lend a helping paw if you can!
The humble doghouse has come a long way in recent years, and nowhere is that more evident than at Austin’s annual Barkitecture festival! This custom doghouse design show features some of the most innovative, creative, and pet-acular doghouses you’re ever likely to see, as some of Austin’s best and brightest architects, interior designers, and builders showcase their work. You and your pooch can head along to Barkitecture in the heart of SOCO, check out these paw-some designs, and bid to buy the one you like the most. The event raises money for local animal charities, and there’s even a Dogstume Contest judged by celebrity dog judges! What more could you possibly want from an event?
Does your pooch always like to sample the latest outfits and look his or her best? If so, you and your furry friend will love Austin’s annual winter fashion show for canines, held at Nordstrom Domain Northside. This paw-some event gives dog lovers and their furry friends exclusive access to Nordstrom to do a little bit of shopping, and then to take in the spectacle that is the highly-anticipated doggyrunway/fashion show starring adoptable dogs from Austin Pets Alive! You can also enjoy appetizers and beverages, grrr-eat gift bags, and tons of giveaways. If your dog is leashed and well-behaved, he or she is more than welcome to attend!
Looking for a fabulously fun night out with your furry friend? Ruff Adventures’ Winter Formal is a mutts-do! This annual dog-friendly event sees dog lovers and their four-legged friends get all dressed up for an evening of canine celebrations. There’s grrr-eat music and plenty of treats to keep canine guests happy, while Ruff Adventures also uses the night to unveil its "Ruff High" Dog Yearbook, featuring some of Austin's favorite doggos. Best of all, this 80s/90s-themed bash raises funds to benefit some animal-based non-profits! Tickets to the event, which is held at Scholz Garten, are highly sought-after, so get in early to secure yours.
Mardi Paws is a relatively new event on Austin’s social calendar for dog lovers, but it looks set to quickly become a favorite! Held in February at Lustre Pearl East, this annual Mardi Gras parade gives dogs and their humans the chance to strut their stuff for an adoring crowd. Dogs and owners are encouraged to dress in their finest outfits to match the parade’s theme, and then get ready for an afternoon full of fun! Dogs get paraded around in floats, plenty of tasty refreshments are consumed, and a whole lot of money is raised to help local rescue groups Cutie PITooties and Austin Dog Rescue keep saving the lives of canines in need.
Lots of wag, lots of swag, and a fur-ociously fun day out — that’s what you can expect at the Mighty Texas Dog Walk, held in March at Austin American-Statesman! This huge dog walk gives you and your pet the chance to enjoy a scenic stroll along the shores of beautiful Ladybird Johnson Lake. Along the way, you can fill up your tote bag with heaps of premier dog food and treat samples for your fur-baby. Not only is it a tasty (for your dog) and sociable event with a wonderfully relaxed atmosphere, it also raises funds for Service Dogs, Inc, which adopts and trains shelter dogs to assist people living with deafness or mobility-related disabilities! Pre-registration tickets start from $30 per dog.
