The companion animals of South Houston are well served by a number of excellent animal welfare organizations, meaning that help is never far away when a dog falls on tough times!
The Houston Humane Society is just one of the many local non-profits committed to helping animals in need. With a commitment to end cruelty, abuse, and the overpopulation of animals while providing the highest quality of life to the pets in its care, the society has made a huge difference in the lives of thousands of animals. From a pet adoption program to humane education, animal crimes investigations, and a low-cost animal wellness and spay/neuter clinic, it offers a range of initiatives to help homeless animals.
However, as a non-profit organization that doesn’t receive any government funding, the Houston Humane Society relies on generous support from the community to be able to keep giving pets in need a second chance.
Rescued Pets Movement is another Houston animal welfare organization well worth a mention. This non-profit is dedicated to giving homeless dogs and cats a shot at a brighter future by rehabilitating those animals and transporting them to communities throughout the USA and Canada where there is a greater demand for adoptable pets.
It’s a unique approach and one that has seen the lives of more than 22,000 companion animals saved since late 2013. If you’d like to help Rescued Pets Movement continue this wonderful work, consider making a donation, becoming a foster carer, or volunteering your time to assist canine companions in need.
The Houston SPCA provides essential care and shelter to the city’s homeless pets, giving those unlucky animals the chance at finding happiness. Each year, to raise much-needed funds, it hosts this paw-some doggy walk for local pet lovers! Held in November at the Memorial Park Picnic Loop, iWalk for Animals features a 5K Canine Caper for anyone feeling especially active and a 1K Pup Strut for those who want to take it a little easier. There’s plenty of fun and games to enjoy after the walk as well, including doggy demonstrations, live entertainment, pet product vendors, and heaps of woof-tastic canine contests!
If exploring a dog-centric pop-up market with your canine companion sounds like your idea of a grrr-eat night out, you’ll love Houston Dog Pop! Held a few times a year, this paw-some canine festival gathers a host of dog-related businesses, activities, and games in the one place for a handful of hours. There’s also a fenced play area for canine guests and a wonderfully cute and entertaining pet costume contest, so this is an event you don’t want to miss!
