Give a Wag! Gives to Kirkland Shelters

Founded in 1990, Homeward Pet Adoption Center has been compassionately rescuing, sheltering, and rehoming animals in need throughout Kirkland and the surrounding communities. Originally operating as the Hooterville Pet Safehaus, the organization was founded on the belief that euthanasia should only ever be considered as a last resort to end suffering from illness or injury.

The tiny no-kill shelter rehomed 20 dogs and 350 cats during their first year in operation. Today, the organization has grown and relocated, providing care, shelter, and forever homes for more than 1,000 animals every year. Each animal that comes through the doors at Homeward Bound receives a full veterinary examination, vaccinations, microchip identification, and a spay/neuter before they are made available for adoption.

The shelter advocates for spay and neuter as a humane and effective method to mitigate pet overpopulation and prevent unwanted litters, thus strengthening the local community. To make this an attainable goal, the shelter operates the Homeward Pet Low-Cost Spay & Neuter Clinic. They also work with the community to carry out their Last Litter Program, a service available to spay dogs and cats brought in with adoptable litters.

To serve the animals and pet owners of the community, Homeward Pet offers free training classes with every adoption, a pet food bank for families in need, daily shelter, dog behavioral training, a foster program, and a canine enrichment program. Homeward Pet Adoption Center relies on the generosity and dedication of volunteers to maximize the quality of life of the shelter's dogs and cats.

The ultimate goal of the shelter is to find a responsible, permanent home and life full of love for every homeless animal that seeks refuge in their establishment.
